If you are trying to work it out yourself, start small as in 1mm thick and then keep changing them out for thicker ones depending on how the boot feels on your foot when you skate, one foot balance drills will tell you pretty quickly if the thickness is right.

If you see a foot specialist who works with ice skaters, they should get you to stand on a balance board that replicates the feel of an ice skate under your foot. It measures the pressure points across your feet and cameras front / rear / sides show your foot and body alignment. Then by moving your foot across the board to simulate blade alignment and adding wedges to either simulate an orthotic or a shim, they can work out what works best for you.

Very helpful, thank you. Actually was just out today and found out that the (I think) manager of Total Hockey can do it for me. So with shims he'll start me off with an amount that could work for me, and if it doesn't I just go back for a thicker one? If I'm understanding that correctly? As long as it's not a nuisance doing so. Never took tried messing with the holder on a boot before so.

I would imagine the size is very dependent on your degree of over pronation. You should probably experiment with shim width and get that dialed in prior to ordering skates with a built in shim.  Ordering the wrong shim set up could cause more problems than you are trying to correct.

Yeah I think you're right was just wondering what generally is used first. Like what range is generally used

Eventually I will go the VH route but only when I have had my feet assessed and we have worked out where the optimal placement of the blade should be, And I'll be asking for extra extra stiff stiffness through the inner ankle area. I just don't have the $'s to get it done now.

I have overpronation as well but was thinking about getting shims built into the VH boot. Do you recommend this? And should i just tell them my problem and they can estimate what size is needed (1/8" or whatever) or should I try and find that myself?

no shops in my area have said they can do it so I may have to drive a bit, but I can

  4. So I've read all the threads on skate shims and can't for the life of me find what "size" is generally used

If anyone saw my post in the VH thread I'm possibly going to order another pair with built in shims. Shops around me have said they cannot do it.

What size is common for over probation? I've read 1/8"... I've read 1/4"... Too much variation. Help!

Do you still have the red innersole in? You'd be surprised how much extra space that gives you if you take it out. Also shaving the sides of your current tongues helps too. There's lots of things to try before ordering a whole new pair of skates.

Well I was going to get a new pair because I want built in shims. Most shops around here I've gone to told me they can't do them. Plus I would convert this pair to roller anyways.

I do have the red in but ill try that!  Speaking of, thought I remember people saying they cut the red footbed? Could this work kind of like a shim?

  6. I don't necessarily feel like my foot is being smushed. From that angle I posted though that's norma depth wisel? I know there is a lot of wrap on the top of your foot but that much?

Im ordering a pair of the thinner standard tongues and going to try that out.

if anyone has experiences on ordering shims in VH please let me know.

  7. So I'm thinking about ordering another pair and just want a couple opinions if you guys' dont mind. So the several months I've had my skates I've had to lift the tongue up to lace them, as my foot is right at the top of the boot like the picture below. I'll lace them underneath and then pull the lace over the tongue. That's why I was thinking about ordering a thinner tongue but just now realized I may need a little bit of a deeper boot instead (yes I'm slow when it comes to skates). Is this normal for most people, due to the wrap of the skate, or do I actually need a deeper boot? I've read something about having to heat up the eyelets but I'm clumsy as hell and don't want to overheat the skate. All I know is that I've enjoyed these skates a lot, but this is one of the minor complaints I have. My first goal in getting this skates was to eliminate the pain I was having in my right foot, which made it almost impossible to play hockey.  That is done so now I'm looking for some minor comfort and performance updates.

I'm thinking about using my old tracings, since it was only last August, and making some updates. Those updates would be rust-coated eyelets, the regular standard tongue, built in shims (I overpronate ALOT and use motion control shoes), and minus the built in shot blockers as IMO they're not needed for the level I play.

I hate the Bruins but those Krug Warrior's are beautiful. I'll be surprised if he doesn't make Team USA.

Its kinda late but can you re-write this a little not sure what your meaning?

Yea I was also a bit confused about what they were talking about.

Adam14 is saying that any custom skates are considered "pro-spec" and "pro-stock". The only reason we don't refer to all VH skates as pro-stock is because the feet from which they are molded are not all professional hockey players. Orland refuted this, saying that just because it's a custom skate doesn't mean it has pro-level stiffness and features.

    I agree with the latter.

  10. Yea, I heard they were LE's so maybe like you said he just wanted the black boot. Maybe it happens more often than we know about but I would've never thought a pro to buy retail skates. Makes me wonder that if a pro will skate in retail skates, is there really that much of a difference between custom and retail skates. I guess I was also under the impression that the pros got whatever they wanted and whenever they wanted it. JR you would know the answer to that though.

I would think that there is no comparison. Retail skates can only be so moldable.

Not to knock on David Clarkson but if they did "lose him" I doubt they're feeling it much lol. Of course its always good to have as much NHLers in their skates as possible, but would be more concerning if Pavelski/Byfuglien/Pirri stopped using VH.

  11. The logo is gone in all the recent pictures (pro and others). Is that how they come by default now or is everyone ordering them without the logo? I would miss not having the logo on my next pair. I'm not a fan of the big black space that looks like something is supposed to go there.

Makes sense for VH to do so, though. Wouldn't surprise me to see a lot of Warrior guys in them this season, figuring they don't make a skate. I like the logo personally.

  12. I'd recommend trying them with the VH footbeds first. They are quite nice. The SOLE may take up too much volume and change how your foot sits in the boot. If you feel like you need a bit more material under your arch you can add a bit more of the material under the VH insole, or try something like the SOLE insole. I'd also recommend re-baking them if you change insoles.

    Sounds good! Thank you!

  13. I had SOLE super-slim in mine for a while to give my arch a bit more support. I ended up not liking the skating feel and went to a Black Superfeet where I get less heel lift, less arch support, but better foot feel.

I have the SOLE Thin Sport footbeds which I actually haven't tried much on ice, but while standing on them feel really comfortable.

Do you recommend I put them in my skates on the first baking, or use the footbeds they provide? I think I may stick with their footbeds since its already traced on my foot. I feel like if I put a footbed in that gives me more arch support, wouldn't it alter how my foot sits in the boot and decrease some of the customization? May be a dumb question. I'm really looking just to add shims to decrease my pronation.

I don't care so much about a bag but at least a shipping box that hasn't already been used three times would have been nice. LOL. No, honestly I couldn't care less.

Jeez Bbd94 I couldn't even get the boot on until it was baked. Not even close.

You can use other insoles, but you'll want to rebake. I put my Superfeet in mine but then I had a LOT more room in the toe box, so I trimmed my red footbed and put them back in. Still need to trim my yellow a bit.

I actually had to have another person help me try and get it on. Just wanted to see how it felt pre-baking, so I can see the difference it makes. I'm getting them baked on Monday

  14. I definitely like the look. Just some loose stitching and glue which isn't THAT big of a deal.

I think with the JR sizing now in place though they should improve the presentation. Put it in a bag and "buff" it out for the kiddies.

@Optimus, that's the first thing I noticed when I put the skate on without it being baked even. Amazing.

Do you guys think it defeats the purpose to put in a SOLE footbed in the skates?

  15. Just got my skates!

Have to say I'm kind of disappointed in the presentation. Lots of epoxy and material hanging off. They didn't even put it in a bag. Just threw it in a box and stuck a label on it. Was expecting more for this price point but as long as it's not structural I guess it'll be OK.

I did try them on before I baked them. Impossible to get the laces on because there is soooo much wrap, so hopefully the problem subsides when they are baked. It does say to bake them before even trying them on, so not surprised I can't get them on without it.

I'll keep you all updated and see if I can figure out how to post photos. When I did get them on without the tongue and laces I don't feel ANY pressure point on my haglunds which is absolutely fantastic.

Just a bag next time please lol
