  1. For those of us who only got the profiling from you this year and didn't really get to test them out due to COVID, can we still provide reviews later? I feel indebted to write something given how responsive and supportive you were.

Right after you profiled my runners, the local rinks closed, and by the time I moved to the new city, I was only able to skate around 4 times before the rink re-closed (they won't reopen until 2021). It sucks that this project came to an end. With COVID though, I imagine it was bound to limit any real testing this year.

Going to take a stab at some items that came up over the past couple of posts. Thanks everyone for reaching out!

Forefoot is very comparable. Heel start a little more snug (but still very much a "B" heel) and can move out to compare with the nexus heel if necessary.

Rib EE has a higher instep measurement than AS3 Pro EE, so more volume and wrap🙂

Very good call out here. I'm going to attempt to link some photos clarifying the current fit lineup:

Keep in mind that this 2nd image does not include the updated Super Tacks EE. Just imagine a little bit bigger yellow box 🙂

    1. Same idea on Jetspeed. RFM composite is extremely thermoformable and especially so in a one-piece boot as the bottom of the skate is also RFM and lacks the glue and nails that can impact the bottom and immediate sides of a two piece skate from moving as much.
    2. Not sure what happened during your bake but regardless, the next step is to remold them (2 mins in a hot skate oven, no more) and tie them about how you would when playing. It's not necessary to tie them extremely tightly or really crank down on the eyelet row. Be sure to remain sitting until the skates are cool to the touch and don't get up and move around. This should take awhile, maybe 15-20 mins. Take care when molding to lace the skates back up after you've taken them off and leave a full 24hr (at room temp, but colder is better) before unlacing and skating. Good luck!
    3. Not sure if this applies to you, but when taking them off after normal use, loosen the laces down several eyelets before taking them off. It should be extremely easy to slide off and not require much leverage or effort. The skate goes under a lot of stress when being tied up and especially when being removed so taking an extra 10 seconds to really unlace them can help preserve the molded fit.

Follow-question: when rebaking my FT490, does this "reset" the memory foam inside? I'm worried that, since my complaint is that the skates feel too loose after the original baking, that a second bake would only make them feel looser.

I would like to make sure how rebaking affects the skate construction before moving forward since this may ruin the fit entirely for me. I should have not tightened them so much in the original bake...

As of 2019, Ribcor EE is CCM's widest, deepest out of the box skate. Conversely, Ribcor D is CCM's narrowest out of the box skate. The reasoning is that Ribcor construction is uniquely suited to molding and will serve a customer on the narrow (with D) and wide (with EE) part of the spectrum equally well. The main difference (and this is true for all CCM skates) is that the quarter material is super reactive to heat. So while the Rib EE may seem similar out of the box in size to a competing product, the amount that it will change during a baking/molding process is significantly greater and can fit a lot more feet as a result. Rib EE ends up being CCM's largest and blankest canvas for a foot to fit into and that's what makes it so useful for those with significantly different than stock sized/shaped feet.

Volume is a little challenging regarding Ribcor because of these same molding properties; the amount of wrap is going to depend on a lot of factors including the unique geometry of each foot and the only way to know for sure is to heat one up and tie it. CCM skates can be rebaked multiple times so no need to worry if it requires a couple molds, just keep 24 hours between heatings.

Finally, all CCM skates come with a 90 day satisfaction guarantee so if it ends up not working out, just return the skates and get something different.

As a PS: We've done hundreds of retail fittings since the intro of the new Rib EE and 1 important learning has been that if it seems like nothing will fit well, Ribcor will probably end up working... Oftentimes we'll get called by dealers or equipment managers to work out an especially difficult fitting scenario and more often than not, the result is a Ribcor construction.

Good luck with your skate search!

This is interesting. Can you elaborate a bit more on how heat moulding would impact the fit for the current Jetspeed skates (the one piece 490 and FT2)?

I actually own the 490 and they fit super tight before baking. However, after heat moulding and skating in them for a bit, they loosened up more than I would have liked.

Did I lace them too tight when baking? Is there a recommended CCM instruction for how to tie skates when baking the new one piece skates?

FYI I cranked on my laces as tight as I could because LHS have always said that this the best way for the boot to mould to your feet, but now I think the internal cushioning may have flattened out in the process...

Yes, it is. I don't understand the second part of your question. The 2X and 2X Pro fit the same and thus both are different from the previous 1X.

Different price points often fit differently. For example, the S29 is noticeably more tighter around the arches compared to the 2S and 2S Pro.

I was wondering how the 2X fit might differ from the Pro and 1X (mostly in terms of arches, heel lock, and volume).

It gives the boot more flexibility, which is supposed to result in better agility, and east west movements. I mean, it could be legit if done right. If the boot flexes more, and moves with you, then this would result in better agility

I watched the pure hockey review video of these skates, and the guy explicitly stated around 3:50-ish that the dyna flex is just a name assigned to this “system”, which includes the toe cap, injected lacing, carbon curv composite, new foam/liner, tongue, etc. It seems like wishy washy marketing nonsense to me. Probably could have just tacked on the new toe caps on the 1x and called that dyna flex.

  6. I have to say, irregardless of actual performance benefits, Bauer just feels like they're falling behind CCM from an average consumer's standpoint.

With CCM removing unnecessary materials and improving their one-piece tech generation after generation, the new Vapors look so outdated. So much extra stitching, layered materials, etc.

Even if the one-piece benefit is overstated at the moment, there's no denying that CCM is putting R&D money to improve their technology every year. Compared to Bauer pushing out the same CURV composite every year, I'm really happy with what CCM is doing. Bauer didn't even want to put any soft comfort edge padding on their 2S model last year.

If you can fit equally well into Vapor and Jetspeed, why would you opt for Vapors at this point? Would you ever pick the 2X over the FT490?

I got the stallions hpr 1.1.  I got mediums.  They fit good out the box. They are more mobile out the box then my old high end vapors that at broke in.  Biceps could be a little larger.  At the level i play anymore i am more concerned with a random fall than a slash.  That being said the length is perfect.  Volume could be a little more.  I have a "game" tonight.  I'll update this.  That being said I contacted St x regarding my fit concern.  They said they had no problem creating a return slip for me if they didn't fit.

UPDATE: Super pleased with the preformance.  I gotta say as advertised didn't slip.  Super comfortable and flexible. As far as elbow pads go this is as close as i have flet to wearing nothing.  No pinching or binding. I honestly dig the the sleeve. The bicep strap is a moot point for me with the sleeve.  The sleeve keeps it plenty tight enough up top. I will probably just tack it to the sleeve as it holds some of the pad in place so I don't see cutting it off as an option.

My concern and hesitation with the sleeve design is that it will smell like crazy after 6 months or so of play. I air out my gear regularly and use one of those portable dryers, so my gear just has a slight odor, but the under layers really reek! Despite the anti-odor claims, they smell so bad that, at this point, laundry only makes them smell good for 1 wear. I can't imagine forcing something like that to be sawn onto my gear. Traditional elbow pads without sleeves seem so much easier to maintain.

  8. I'm in the 2S right now and actually like it better than the 2S Pro when I tried them both on. I don't like the new lacing system on the 2S Pro and the 2S is just right in terms of stiffness for me (they're practically the same, but the 2S might be like half a point less stiff - you probably couldn't get me to pass a blind test though). The best part is the fit - these are REALLY snug skates. I went though insane number of pairs and these were the best. I had Bauer bumps before and had to wear sleeves around my ankle/heel, but no longer need them due to the ample cushioning in the heel area.

Got my RX3 gloves, elbows, and shins today. Have to say I'm just as pleased with the gear as I though I would be. The finish of the gear is top notch, just had one thread on the shins I had to trim (it was too long, no evidence of pulled out stitching). Tags all pulled out easily. The fit of the gloves and elbows are great. It's brand new, but already feels pretty good when stick handling. Tons of motion but no worries about protection. The hyper extension thumb protection is the best I have seen. The hex cell wrap is really form fitting and protective. The sleeve in the elbow pads is not loose, but it isn't tight enough it cuts off circulation and provides discomfort. The end of the gloves and the elbows meet up very well.

The palms and the super fabric on the gloves is nice, but there is no getting around how it seems slightly abrasive and I am worried that overtime it could wear away at my stick. Super fabric is used in some motorcycle gear and some people have complained about it scratching their bikes. Also not stoked on all the small STX logos, just kind of makes the gloves seem like the company is trying too hard. All gloves have thumb logos, but I think the RX3 logo would have looked better here. The small STX on the index finger just looks out of place, and the side of the palm is whatever but it would look better without it.

The shins are not bad. The shell provides great coverage and the liner is very comfortable. Strapped up they are very secure. Now I do have humongous baloon calves, but I do wish for longer straps and more wrap. The side wraps are good coverage, but I would prefer more. If you can see in the one picture, the rectangular stitching is the velco hooks. Had to really crank the strap to get the uncomfortable velcro off my leg, and there is still a bit there. I am worried that having the crank some of the straps could over stress them. I almost wish I could have the shell/liner of a 15" but the calf wraps and straps of a 16". STX if you're reading this, I would buy that product right away, perhaps call it a size + (size 15"+ size equals 15"shell/16" calves, etc.).

Really good to know. I, too, have humongous calves. I don't know why. Every other part of my body is cookie cutter standard, but my calves are huge and the calf raise machines were always easy. I wish instead of being naturally gifted with calves, I had huge glutes or hamstrings lol.

Anyway, even my Tacks shin guards have trouble with the big strap wrapping around. I'm still wishing for minimalist shin guards I can wear underneath skating pants for pond hockey.

I'm gonna wait for the shoulder pad review. I'm thinking about those and the elbows. My current elbows always slide down by the end of games and it's so annoying.

I wish stx would give the weight of the sticks on their website. I’m sure they’re premium but I’d like to know how light.

I wish STX had the weight of all of their gear on their website. At this point, all I really care about is light, mobile gear for everything but my shin guards since I sometimes have to block shots as a center. Being able to play with even 5% more gas during the 3rd period is worth it if the gear is light and can shed water weight.

I honestly dont think they charge very much to review products. They likely make most of their money from people watching the videos of them reviewing products hoping for an unbiased review. Like how Tyler 'Ninja' Blevins plays Fortnite on Twitch and make 500k a month..... Makes me wonder where I went wrong in life when people like him a PewDiePie make so much money doing literally nothing at all. Sigh.

It should be around $2500-3000 for Pavel Barber to do a dedicated video review of the new Surgeon stick. Negotiations can bring that up depending on how experienced he is. If should also include cross-channel content (IG stories, posts, etc.) in the package. For a niche channel like Pavel's who generates 40-50k views per video, that would be a competitive rate. The rates of Ninja and Pewdiepie would be on a totally different level.

Because IW's videos get a fair bit of eyes and Chase and Dan have done product insight videos before. Not sure about STX's West Coast distribution either, but IW could make a good partner.

You give demo products to the bigger retailers like Pure, Monkey, whoever is big in Canada so customers can actually touch the gear.

That’s really not how retail works lol...

Even if STX paid IW a million bucks for a video, it would only confuse IW customers who’ll ask them why they can’t find the reviewer products on their website.

STX can and should get massive video reviews via influencer marketing on YouTube, IG and especially forums like this where there are high converting customers.

Hi everyone! My name is Matt and I am the Brand Manger for STX. We are super excited to launch the Surgeon RX3 line as well as STX Direct. I am here to help with any question you may have.

Hello! Really excited as well. Not in the market immediately, but would love to get the below questions answered for research (and sharing with teammates if anyone needs them)!

Do you have the weight of medium size senior for the shoulder pads?

More specifically, how much lighter are they than the older Surgeons and Stallions and can you talk about how much sweat/water weight they keep off?

The lower end shoulders look much more low profile - how much weight difference is there between those and the RX3, after accounting for typical sweat and water weight?

I signed up but never got that code 😞

It’ll probably take some time. This all just launched yesterday so I imagine they’re working overtime to fix any issues.

I agree though, these prices are nuts. I wish I needed gear just to support them because I would love for this to be the future of hockey. These are the prices that consumers have always expected - not $300 on a new stick.

  15. 20 minutes ago, Paddy said:

If it stays that way, it may put a hurting on the no name undercutting stick companies that sell direct to consumer. Same price, with a big name behind one; i know who I'd pick. I don't break sticks, so warranties mean very little, but the warranty policy from the no names is also pretty terrible from what i read.

Yeah there's no way anyone should really pick No Name at this point. STX bringing all of their research and technology for this price point is a way better value. Plus, free shipping and no risk 14 day trial.

I'm most excited about the new Surgeon protectives though. Can't wait for reviews. How do they actually compare to what's offered by Bauer/CCM/Warrior?
