  1. Nah, not for me. I've sort of considered the Sparx and Prosharp, and if Dad builds a rink like he's been threatening to do, I'll pressure him to get the Sparx. But you really only need your blades profiled once in their lifetime, assuming nothing goes wrong. And with the Sparx and Prosharp, nothing should go wrong.
  2. General question: Can any of the at-home machines do profiles? Or do you have to get the $10k version for that?
  3. More thoughts on foot and ankle pain: How much do you weigh? If you're significantly overweight, that could do it. Is this amount of skating new to you? Meaning, did you just go from 0-100 without any buildup? Have you skated this much in years past and experienced this?
  4. Going from 9' to 11', you'll initially feel like your skates are fighting you any time you try to accelerate or turn. But you'll also feel much more stable, your top speed is faster, and it is less fatiguing to skate with a larger profile - you don't have to dig in as much, there is more blade in contact with the ice so you glide better. Nowadays folks are doing quad profiles and everything, but I've found no reason to try them. If I did I would try the Quad 0.5. As for switching skates mid day, if you get the profile and pitch close enough between the two, you won't have any issue if you're a decent skater.
  5. I referee. I'm currently in CCMs, Jetspeeds, but have been in Grafs for most of my reffing career (14 years) and am actively looking to go back to them. On marathon days, I'll actually use 2 pairs of skates - my CCMs are good, but not quite the right fit, a little too tight. I'll wear them in the morning, then switch to the Grafs in the afternoon. Keeps the boot from getting soaked in sweat, and while it could be mental, my foot feels better than being in the same skate all day. I cannot tell you how they will fit compared to Bauer, but I can say that traditionally Graf has been 11' Radius, and pitched forward. +2 from the CCM holder is what I got, and it feels the same as my Graf's. Graf now uses a 10' radius, at least on the Peakspeed line, to be more in line with Bauer and CCM. If I get new Grafs, I will get them profiled to 11'. I recommend trying an 11' radius (or 10', if you think going from 9' will be too big a change). I find you're more stable, and using less energy to balance yourself during the game. It'll take a bit to get used to. Acceleration will be harder, and you may lose a little bit of agility initially, but use proper positioning and it is rarely if ever an issue. EDIT: One other comment, try a shallower hollow than you do to play in. 5/8 minimum, but 11/16 or 3/4 should be considered as well.
  6. Thanks! I really need to try them on, then decide if the 7700 is worth $130 over the 4700 (and that $130 is also buying from a LHS that I've known and trusted my entire life, vs an online only retailer with no warranty). I've heard so many different thoughts on the fit, that I just don't know what to believe. Some say they're the same as the 703's, some say similar to the G75s (and the G75 and 703 should be quite dissimilar), some say it is like the 735.... And now we're getting into one of the big problems of Graf - they had so many different models that nobody knew what they're looking at.
  7. Previously in 707s - I got into those when I was 16. I wore those for a long, long time. I just put them on last night and it was like seeing an old friend after a long, long time. I don't know whether or not they'd still be the right fit for me; my foot grew between when I got them and when I stopped wearing them, but I LOVED those skates. Then in 2015, I got a pair of G75s (not Lite). Those were excellent as well, though arguably slightly too roomy for me. They were bought on closeout for such a good deal that I couldn't pass them up. The big problem I have with other brands is the lack of ankle flex. Even dropping an eyelet or two, the skates nowadays are far too stiff around the ankle. My hope is that the Peakspeeds, despite being more "Bauer/CCM like", will have their famous ankle mobility. (And yes, I tried the Ribcore... Never felt right in the store, maybe I should try again). Tangent: Something that is amazing to me, today we have essentially 3 brands: Bauer, CCM, and True. When I was a kid, I could pick between Graf, Bauer/NikeBauer, CCM/RBK, Easton, Mission, MLX/VH... On the used rack, you may have found Micron/Mega, Nike, Daoust, even Reidell made some good hockey boots in the 90's. Sure, there have been fits and starts (Vebero, for instance), but nothing like we used to have.
  8. TL;DR: What is the difference in the PK4700 and PK7700, and does anyone have any experiences to share about either of them? Because I can't be simple and just be happy with CCM or Bauer, and I can't afford True's... For many years, I've only ever really been happy in Grafs. After a year in CCM, and a couple of false starts in Bauer's, I'm considering some Peakspeeds. However, I cannot find the difference in the different models of Peakspeed. Has anyone done a comparison of the PK4700 and PK7700? Is the fit going to be the same in each of them? I'll probably end up passing on the Peakspeeds and saving up for some custom ordered True's (or Graf, honestly), but wanted to see if anyone has experience here.
  9. Hi all, I picked up a pair of 2017 model year Jetspeeds Xtra Pro (based off FT370) when a LHS was going out of business for an insanely good deal. They fit well enough that if I were just a beer-leaguer, I wouldn't be making this thread. But I'm not a beer leaguer; I'm a referee. Being in my skates for 20 hours over a 3 day weekend is not uncommon, and the Jetspeeds aren't cutting it. They pinch my forefoot just a too much. By - so with that, I'm considering Tacks, but have some questions. Obviously the best answer would be to go try some on, but I've been having a hard time finding any locally - I will eventually, I'm sure, but until then I have some questions. I'm a size 8 in the Jetspeeds, 271 holder (again, 2017 model). Do the Tacks (2018 and up) have the same sizing standards for the length? Is the pitch the same in the Jetspeeds as the Tacks? Knowing that I need to try these on, does MSH think that I should consider EE Jetspeeds? How does the heel compare on EE Jetspeeds to D Tacks? I've read that Tacks are very stiff. The only thing I'm concerned about in that department is ankle flex. How is it if you drop the top eyelet? For comparison, I have traditionally been in Grafs, and drop the top eyelet on the Jetspeeds. Any other words of wisdom for folks who went from Jetspeeds to Tacks, or vice versa?
  10. I know this used to be done quite commonly. I am about to pass on some wood sticks to my dad, and I know that he will complain about the curve. Is there an easy way to straighten a blade out? These are Christian 5300s, Sher Wood 5030s, and maybe an old Montreal - can't remember if it is still in my garage or not.
  11. Thanks! Do you have an opinion on the True compared to the RE-AKT?
  12. Care to explain this for those of us who don't keep up with all the news/rumors/etc.? I really want a 4500 with better padding. Love the look. Love the fit. Don't believe that it provides the best protection in todays day and age.
  13. Any marks on it from the collision? I felt like it would hold up as well as others to repeated bumps, but that wasn't based on anything other than gut feeling.
  14. 9 to 6.5 sounds like a bigger jump than normal, but I haven't been in Bauer's for probably 16 years so maybe that is normal. In any case, it sounds like you need a deeper boot. Nexus is, to my understanding, a more voluminous boot than the Supreme, so I'd start there.
  15. https://www.helmet.beam.vt.edu/hockey-helmet-ratings.html True got 1/5 stars, second lowest score possible (0 is possible) in the Virginia Tech rating. I know that some here have issues with the scoring methodology, but regardless I thought that the MIPS would have given it a much higher score. I was considering buying one, but now I'm probably going with a more affordable option.
  16. Is that because of Coronavirus or Chinese New Year? Or both? When is Lantern Festival?
  17. I don't disagree with this, but my 2 Jofas that I had also had that kneecap crack.
  18. Anyone else still doing just fine with whatever steel came stock on their skates? I've never even considered it, and now apparently it is the next marketable thing, so... good for the marketing departments! In any case, I don't think this changes much for very long. Bauer will come out with a comparable runner if they don't already have one, or else buy Tydan/other company.
  19. Good chance if there was a lawsuit not related to safety, they would still be allowed to sell existing inventory but not make future runs. But I am not a lawyer and I am not familiar with this situation at all.
  20. Worst part about it is that there is no ruling in the USAH rulebook about how it is supposed to be worn, other than "as designed". Try proving "as designed". I want the USA rulebook to implement verbiage about the cage that the chin guard needs to be touching the chin, the top of the cage needs to be all the way in the J-Hooks, J-hooks are necessary (a design and IIRC a requirement for HECC, but again, try proving it), and that there is to be no slack in the straps - i.e. you can't swing the cage back and forth. As a referee, it is something I would really like to have in the book defined clearly. Not sure if HC is different.
  21. After having been in various Graf's for 20 years, my last pair (G75's, favorite skate of all time FWIW) was starting to wear out and I'd been on the lookout for a new pair of skates. A friend from a few hours away called me and let me know that a LHS was going out of business, and the last day it was open had an 80% off lowest marked price on EVERYTHING. These were the skates that were the most likely to fit me that they had, so it is what he got for me. This is probably not the boot that I would have ended up in had I been shopping, and spending real money, but it is not bad and for the price, I could not beat pass it up. I believe they were $350 initially, but after all the discounts I paid $60. I think these are a 2017 model - but don't quote me on that. It is a SMU, with the following features: CCM Jetspeed Xtra Pro Senior Hockey Skates Features Base Model: FT370 Boot: Rocket Frame Composite Core: Speedcore Comfort Pads Outsole: TPU Outsole with Exhaust Tongue: 7mm Black Felt with Embossed LB Tongue Liner: TotalDri Liner with Abrasion Resistant Zones Eyelets: Brass Eyelets Runner: SpeedBlade Stainless +2mm Runner Fit - N/A Like I mentioned above, this is not the boot I would have ended up in had I been spending serious money. I always feel like this is an odd criteria to be rating things on anyways; all feet are different and different models are different. CCM describes it as "medium-volume skate for players with average toe, forefoot, instep, and heel dimensions. Tight at the heel and more narrow at the forefoot. I'd agree with this - they certainly aren't as roomy as I'd like, and I wish they were slightly wider at the forefoot. However, they're comfortable enough to wear for 3 hours at a time. Very stiff, which negatively impacts comfort a slight amount, but if I were a player going an hour at a time and not a referee, I don't think I'd notice that negative impact at all. I also have not noticed any lacebite, whether that is due to the guard on the tongue or the volume being accurate is hard to say. Insole - 1/10 I'm not including this in the total score, but the Insole was the one real negative I had with this. First of all, it isn't so much of an insole as it is a rivet cover. Second of all, it was falling apart brand new! I tried to get a replacement from CCM, but they didn't have any in the size. Uhh.... OK. They offered to send me an orthotic one if I had the purchase receipt, but as my friend picked these up for me I did not and he'd already thrown the receipt away. Blade/Holder - 10/10 SpeedBlade +4.0 with SpeedBlade Stainless +2mm Runner. Coming out of Grafs/Cobras, there wasn't quite as much forward pitch with these as I'd like. A profile later, and I was in good shape. JR would recommend a shim installed, but I didn't have time to ship them out to him and none of the shops around me would install one. No complaints whatsoever. The runners may not be premier runners, but I've had no issues with them and they're holding an edge very well - I have about 50 hours on them too (yes, really - I get my skates sharpened twice a year whether they need it or not!) Weight/Protection - 8/10 Weight is excellent. Super light, at least to me. Protection.... is pretty good, but I took a shot from a moron with his head down and it left me with a good bruise. It was a good shot, but I was still surprised how much it hurt. Durability - 9/10 Some wear and tear, but not a ton. Most of it is on the holder. I'll update as time goes on, but so far I expect to get a few years out of them. Intangibles - 9/10 I like them. The only thing I really don't like, other than the fit which cannot be held against them, is the look. I want a black skate. Call me boring, whatever, but there is a little too much going on for my liking in these. Also, I mentioned the insole issue above. While I was disappointed with CCM for not having the stock insole to replace it, and I was disappointed in myself for not having a receipt, their offer to replace it with one of their orthotic insoles was more than fair. Break in was not bad - not as quick as my Grafs, but not bad at all. Maybe 6 hours. I did bake them as well. Conclusion - 36/40 Writing 36/40 seems low, to be honest, but I just added up all of the above scores. If you asked me to rate these out of 40, I'd probably say 38 or 39 - only when adding up the individuals do I get the "low" score. I'm happy with these, and expect to be for quite a while. The fit isn't quite right, but it is close enough and as mentioned above should not be taken into account for the rating, just information to be an informed buyer. It is a damn good skate, and at the price - even at $350, I can't see paying more for a skate when you can get something this good for that price.
  22. Question is in the title. I like having backup hardware for my stuff, in case something goes wrong. I have SpeedBlade +4.0 holders/runners, and I believe I have a few old pairs of Tacks from my youth in my parents basement that would have Pro-Lite holders. Have the screws changed at all? Could I salvage those from the Pro-Lites to potentially use on my SpeedBlades?
  23. As a kid I was in Supremes, Tacks, Daoust 501, Bauer Airs, and a few Grafs. As an adult (call It age 16 on) I’ve been in Grafs and jetspeeds. My ranking: 1: Graf G75. 2: Graf 707 3: Bauer Air 90(?) 4: my current skates, CCM Jetspeeds
  24. Checked it out today. Things I liked: - SUPER light - MIPS. First helmet I’ve seen that I thought “hey, this could actually help prevent a concussion or lessen its severity”* - Good looking helmet for sure. - It seemed comfortable, but I did not mess with the pads at all Things I didn’t like: - The price. Whoa. - Some of the fit and finish isn’t what I’d expect in a helmet at $50, let alone 5x that price. It seemed like the plastic shell had some rough spots in the vents. - I’m concerned about the long term durability. Related to the above, and probably also the reason it is so light, this helmet doesn’t a hard plastic shell like all the other hockey helmets I’ve ever seen; it is more like a bicycle helmet - there is a very thin, hard plastic shell that appears to have been sprayed onto a foam shell. I don’t know how this is made or how the outer shell is adhered to the inner shell/padding, but it isn’t “typical” hockey helmet construction. I’m not saying that it is a bad thing, I just want to see some long term reviews before laying down my own money on it. *My personal opinion. It just makes sense to me though.
  25. This is where I'm struggling. I have a head. It is my head, it isn't changing if I play hockey or football or badminton. I understand that there is a significant difference in the way that the helmet sits on the head for different sports - I've experienced this myself with my autoracing helmet, hockey helmet, and baseball helmets (although those were as a youth). But the head doesn't change. Why should the head form change? Also, are you able to link to the "sites"? Are you talking about CSA?
