  1. I want to chime in here but have no idea where to start. There is so much bad information being given out.

    JR whats going on???LOL

Most skate profiling is actually very logical and straightforward.

    1. you never want to be on your heels

    2. there is not need EVER to round off the toe and heel.EVER...slight blend yes round off NO!!!!!!

    3. Your profile comes from what you do with the center of the blade.

JR Chadd feel free to agree to disagree here.

Been away for a while working with players this summer but am back for questions on this subject!

  2. It's funny I work in the area where the guy that sells the machines is in Toronto and I haven't heard a peep about it.

Seeing as its juts as hard to get a guy doing the FBV and a regular hollow level I have to guess if you have a bent blade I can seeing this being like an FBV and making it worse....

Very confused now........The channels look deep??

How can that be good for a guy that is used to 1 inch???

Sorry it took me long enough to get on the FBV band wagon and knowing the guy at Pro Sharp here..(Great Guy) ....but a little lost. Last time we talked he was going to make a wheel like FBV?

Also there just testing it with players no formal tests done like with FBV?

  3. [

If someone butchers a skate so badly that you can't skate on an FBV sharpening, you would have the same problem with ROH.

I don't think anyone should be charging more for it, but that's their business.

Much of the technology has been used in machining and manufacturing, but what does that to do with skate sharpening or the validity of the end result? The concept that created the spinner is unrelated to the FBV. Other than the fact that the spinner allowed the FBV to come into existence.

Chadd....how can you say they shouldn't charge anymore? That makes no sense an FBV spinner is upwards of 4 times the price of a regular diamond? All you need is one oops from a good employee never mind a younger one and there goes 80 plus dollars not 12 or 20?

How can you possibly say you cant charge anymore? If doing an FBV properly and most importantly for the first time it takes longer to make sure the edges are good?

It has been said in mainstream media about it being the same price and i totally disagree. I dont think 10 is right but 7 is not out of line at all.

  4. I'm not doubting that the lateral slip is there, we've all experienced it on FBV when the hollow isn't dialed in. But the only reason why I am commenting is because you are saying it is on one skate. Of course, with harder ice, you are going to have to adjust accordingly.

Another possible issue might be a bent blade??? That would cause this as well........sorry didnt see just one skate!

  5. It was both skates, not just the one. I get my skates done at National Sports - they've always done a great job.

I read a bit through the thread, and think perhaps I'm just on the wrong hollow.

I don't know exactly how to put this; when standing upright, almost on the flat on the blade, or a very steep angle, the blade simply washes out for me on this hollow. I know that you can't expect much grip unless you're getting some pressure on a shallower angle on the blade, but when changing direction/quick bodyweight shifts, I continually catch the blade at an angle where it literally feels like someone put a skateguard on my blade, and the skate slips out laterally from underneath me for a few inches, and then catches again.

This didn't happen much during the summer, but it was starting last few skates, and now bigtime tonight. Perhaps its the enhanced "flat" on the FBV that results in so much glide that's contributing to my instability at these angles; at any rate, I'll experiment a bit, and I appreciate the advice.

The store you went to does have the 100/50 all of them do. As for the washing out sometimes you get that when your profile needs to be adjusted. This was brought up when Cory Stillman first tried it. he had a similar feeling and once the profile was adjusted it was right back to feeling like it did with a reg ROH except with the better glide.

  6. So, I thought the consensus report on FBV is that it is pretty damn good, right? I just moved into a new part of town...and went into the local Sports place...it's a small independent place...no big Forzani, Rousseau or Source for Sports behind them...

I ask the guy if they do FBV...he goes:

"No...I've never heard of anyone who likes it...I figure in 5 years it won't even be around anymore"

He then told me that his BM rep told him their machine could be altered to do a flat sharpen at a cost of about $2000...but that it "...wasn't worth it, so don't

I've heard a few say they are not 100% sold on it...but that is the first guy I've heard flat out bash it...

Ok lets make sense of what this guy is saying.....

"No...I've never heard of anyone who likes it...I figure in 5 years it won't even be around anymore"

Ok first part.....Hummm I guess Cory Stillman isn't anyone? As for John Q Public the jury is still out but overall there are more that like it than don't so far.

    As for the second part.

Well even if you just did regular hollows it still saves on wheel and dressing time so that sort of blows that theory.

Well you might say well I like it a little inside the half line...guess what every machine is calibrated differently...however an Spinner dressing is pretty damn close from one machine to the next so if you wanted standard ROH either the BS or the BM spinner style systems will dress better and faster.

  7. I went from a FBV to a regular hollow today and didn't really notice any difference. Our ice isn't that good though

The most improvement I've seen was the super feet insoles

It all depends on who is doing the FBV there are a few tricks to really getting a solid hollow and making it a noticeable difference!

try going back to the FBV .............see if you notice then!

Who do you recommend at Oakville National Sports? I keep getting new/different people and hate not knowing if they are doing it right....

Starting this week there is a new system being used and only certain staff allowed to sharpen and that goes for all stores. Anyone doing the sharpening will be certified on this new system. If you look at the new flyer coming Thursday you will see all about it.

Dave and Matt run that Pro shop though and are the main 2 guys!

  9. What I meant was with a hollow the holder can be tilted and you can still get level edges, can't do that with FBV. Of course if one doesn't know how to set up a holder, it doesn't matter what cut, it will still be off.

With either a Tri-lite holder or a Blademaster holder with the Tri feature the original Max Edge Holder it can be done.

  10. Yes, true, your alignment has to be very accurate with the FBV. It is not as forgiving as a regular hollow cut. It is very hard to "eyeball". I use a special rubber compound to make a mold. I make a mold of a sharpened blade then examine the mold thru a microscope to ensure edges are perfect and centered. Since there are no measuring tools available yet to verify, for me this seems to be the best method to test alignment of machine and accuracy of the cut.

Are you serious or being facetious? Don't mean to be argumentative, I just can't tell over the internet. If you are being serious thats fantastic, I wish all shops provided their customers with that kind of attention to detail.

Jimmy lets be real here.....if the holder isnt set up to be level and centered it would be off on edges if it was a Regular holllow or FBV?

I have heard the same argument but its simple common sense if its off its if if you can line it up its lined up.

Of course you can try and make better holders and such to keep the average blade straight in the holder however we all know that blade thickness can vary and blades can be bent.

  11. I'm joining this thread REALLY late in the game.

My shop's had the FBV for a while, but I've been too stubborn to try it until now. I took a 90/75 to freshly flooded ice... I've never felt anything like that before. It was incredible; felt like I was skating on velvet. But in a good way.

I was on the ice twice today, once for a 3-hour shinny session in the morning (no flood), and then ran a 2-hour hockey camp in the afternoon without stepping off the ice once.

My steel still feels freshly sharpened.

Were are you getting your FBV done?

  12. Just remember that Superfeet don't properly support everyone's foot. I ditched mine pretty fast, although they felt better when I removed the plastic heel cup. The grip is improved over the last set of Vapors simply because it's not throughout the insole, which caused the insole to stick to my socks and bunch up... many times I had to take the skates back off and fix the insole. It was pretty annoying. Obviously, they also added a lot of drainage holes in the insole, again... an improvement. The heel pad is just comfortable. I'm not sure about any shock dampening but the CCM FIT insoles were just comfortable for me. If you compared the previous Vapor insoles, you'd understand why I mentioned this feature as a big surprise/improvement.

That last picture is great, it really shows the texture of the liner.

Just a slight correction. "Just remember that Superfeet don't properly support everyone's foot." Support and fit are 2 different things.

They will support anyone's foot if fitted properly. However you are correct in saying some may not like the support and may need custom orthodics or in some cases nothing but the stock insole.

  13. I am interested in how this works for figure skaters - I have one of those in my house also.

I have no doubt about the glide being a benefit. My only hesitation is they do a lot of foot work where the blade must pivot on the ice, I have found on my skates that the outside edge can catch...I know that I am not explaining this well.

Anyhow, would love to hear the feedback that you get JR...I think that you will need to try several different FBV profiles to find the sweetspot for the figure skating crowd.

I would recommend she use the 90/50 for the figures...if the store you go to normally doesnt have it let me know and I can meet you there!

  14. I also noticed a loss of the edge more quickly than with a regular sharpening.

    Is this normal?

Depends on how you skate and how much you let your edges degrade with a traditional sharpening.

I am having a hard time with all these people needing them to be sharpened so much I am on for 2 hours a min of 2 times a week and have sharpened mine 2 times since January?

Now my players need it more often as they are knocking skates against objects and they are playing JR A but for the average guy I cant see they need to be done so often?

  15. Thanks Chadd. So in your opinion, the profiling I am getting from No Icing is no different than what the guys talking about the M-E would be getting. With the exception that my son is actually geting a better sharpening and more glide with the FBV? The M-E is just getting "started" in the area that I am referring to, and some of these guys have no idea about the profiling I've been geting for 4 years now, and FBV couldn't possibly be anywhere as good as M-E, as they tried to tell me. YET, I heard for the 1st time all season that my son has the most powerful and smoothest stride on the team, taking 2 strides to all the other kids 4 strides and still beating them on speed drills. So maybe I'm not the one talking out my ass, huh? LMAO

Personally I have been trained on the ME system and I would love to be able to use it in my stores but cant.

If I was an ME dealer I would use both the FBV and the ME system and I think it would be even better than anything out there.

Before FBV the finish and the system used with ME was pretty much the best "PROGRAM" out there IMO.

How does it differ from the profiling that I get from No Icing? I'm just trying to get educated. Is there a place I can find that explains the difference between ME and what I am using now, which is No Icing combo? My son really has no issues at all with that part, but I am really interested in the difference bewteen the two. Thanks for your information, trainer, I appreciate it. I looked on the ME site itself it is very limited on info.

I cant answer that as I dont know No Icings form of profiling and how they do it!
