Burning DVD's

Recommended Posts

Alright so I have a DVD burner (but no second dvd drive so I cant make a straight copy) a dvd I want to back up and blank DVD's. Where do I start? I know I need to copy the dvd onto my hard drive then shrink it and burn it. Could somebody help me with what programs I should use and how... Thanks.

Pop the cd you want to burn into your DVD Drive. Open DVD Shrink and "Open Disc". After that's done click "Backup". After DVD Shrink has done it's job, you should have "VIDEO_TS" and "AUDIO_TS" folders saved into wherever you selected. Burn the two FOLDERS, not the files inside onto a DVD+/- R. The AUDIO_TS folder will be empty but burn it anyway because some DVD Players will not read the disc unless it has that folder. For more info go on the forums at Afterdawn.com. It's excellent for learning how to backup all sorts of discs.

AfterDawn is great and so is DVDshrink...it's freeware too.

Just set aside like 2-3 hours for it to encode and burn.

Actually, I have a similar question. With Windows Media Player, you can copy CD's to it. Can you do this with DVD's also? Or just CD's?

I've been doing copies for a few months now and it basically depends on the movie. If the movie has alot of special features and stuff then yeah it will take a while but something bare bones like Ocean's Twelve or like Batman (1989 Version) encoded in less than 20 mins and burnt in Nero in about 10. The longest wait I've had in total was about 1 1/2 hours for Spiderman 2, it was a little over an hour to encode and then about 10-15 mins to burn.

Now is there any trick to this, or is it basically, rent, copy, burn? If it matters I have an Acer 40X Max CD drive and a PlexWriter 16/10/40A burner. I am not very good at this kind've thing at all, I don't even know if my system is capable. Does it take a specific type of DVD player to play the movies back?

I'm practice copying Last Samurai as we speak, so I'll let you know what DVD players it works on. We have a Sony 6-disc changer, a PS2, Alpine in-dash player, and some Panasonic one that was one of the first DVD players out like 7-8 years ago. I think if it works on all those it should be good to go on most players.

There basically isn't a trick to it, just like anything it takes some practice or you'll just have a bunch of coasters to put drinks on. I'm not that good at it this kinda stuff either but really check out afterdawn's forums, you can learn alot from them.

Basically you just need the 2 programs (DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter) and a fair amount of HD space because with using DVD Shrink your shrinking the movie down to about 4 GB's so it can get put on a disc.

When I've made copies for my friends most of them have problems with +R discs, but my stand alone player plays both + and - R's. I would recommend just using -R's since they seem to work on most players

My cousin and a few friends all use DVDshrink to decrypt the movies, so that's good enough for me.

Last Samurai on a TDK DVD-R played fine on the PS2, Sony changer, Panasonic old school DVD player, as well as the alpiine one.

Can I copy it from the CDrom to the Writer? or do i have to use the shrink and such?

So you have a video on CD, or what? The problem is the DVD-R's you buy arn't big enough to hold an entire movie and all the features, so you need to shrink the size down to fit on a disc. If you're trying to copy from a DVD you need something like DVD shrink, because you also need to decrypt the video from the disc, which is what companies do to prevent you from just copying it. So you do need to use something like DVD shrink, but it's pretty easy, especially if you use Nero.

Thanks for the feedback guys. DVD shrink is really really easy to use (given you have nero)... Only took 35 minutes total for each dvd, not too bad.

Do you need a dvd burner ? I have a cd burner could i just use this ?

No you need a DVD burner to burn DVDs. You can burn VCDs. Google it, Nero can do it, check with your DVD players first to see if it plays VCDs or SVCDs

What programs would you suggest for burning Cd's? Mostly for cars and such. I had a Nero program which was great, but had some problems with the computer in general and now its gone. I'm looking for something Free thats fairly easy. I tried something with WMP, but had some problems.

I use MusicMatch, which isn't free but works well.

But that leads into another question. Has anybody found a program who's normalization actually works? I use Audiograbber to rip, and the Average function does a decent job. Then I normalize through Music Match, which makes the songs closer. Yet I still occasionally have to adjust the volume on my receiver, which means not ALL the songs have been normalized to the same volume.

Anyone found a program they consider foolproof?

Try Itunes. It is very good and simple for CDs.
