These are good numbers too.

Since the start of my summer training, I've gain 25 lbs of 1RM on bench press so I mean with a good routine, I'm sure everyone can get good improvement.

Its truely a matter of determination. If you want it, you can get it when it comes to physical condition. The "wanting" and "getting" shouldn't apply to steroids however. :D

I don't work out all of the time...

I only go hard during the summers.

I was born with naturally strong legs (I'd say very strong).

I was never strong in the bench press category. I prefer doing dumbell presses over the bench press.

If you do not believe that I can squat 425 lbs. then I will pay your way to come watch me workout if it means that much to you.

For someone playing at your level I don't doubt it for a second. If you look at any D1/D3 strength test the numbers are very similar to that on average. One of my buddies plays for Sacred Heart, some of the guys are pushing 550-600 on the squat.

on a side note, the 'cuse stars (matt barth) wont stop calling the house for my brother, even offering a very very inexpensive season in the EJ. i seriously think i am going to take the joey kocur approach this year, drink and fight alot, hope some one finds me in the beer league. jk ive been tearing the weights up, doing mostly core exercises

Syracuse also just picked up one of the strongest goalies out of Junior B. My local rochester team....Ben Binga. Should be a stronger year for syracuse then it has been for the past few seasons. I might have to go check out #94....I love watching younger guys going balls out for a potential scouting report for higher hockey levels.

I am not much of an athelete, but also have strong legs and back, and I have done 585 on a leg press. But I hindsight I would advise against even trying to do stuff like that.

1) if you have strong legs, then that is probably not what you have to exercise. I now work on things that I do poorly on, like bench press.

2) heavy weights have started to take a toll on my knees. I now go with more reps on lighter weights, and really try to do the exercises SLOWLY. You can get the same benefit going slow as adding 30% more weight, and it is much easier on the joints.

3) if you are doing heavy lifts, to show off or something, really make sure you have warmed up a lot by pyramiding up the weights with warm up lifting leading to the final lift. Otherwise you might feel something pop, and that is bad.

4) another alternative is to lift very fast (olympic lifting) but with relatively light weights. You can get quite a workout with 100 pounds!

I don't know what my max weights are because my trainer has said that at my age when you are still filling out you should only do hi-rep low-weight excersise. I have only been going to the gym for about 4 months and I can bench 180x20 and I have only been doing hack squats, they are quite a bit harder then normal squats. I can only do about 210x25 on that. I am 5'7" 150lb's but I was only 120 when I started going to the gym. Right now I am doing a lot of polymetrics (spelling ??)at least I think that is what they are called. Because of my hight I don't want to put on a lot of weight because I want to be a fast and agile guy. Anybody else doing polymetrics. Also what are your guys body fat %'s like. I know the last test we ran I was under 7%. And which do you guys think is more important,dry-land or the gym. Like if you had only a limited amout of time in a day and you could only do one would you choose to go to the gym or shoot pucks and stickhandle etc.??

You can't substitute any dryland for hockey training. Skating, shooting, stickhandling, etc., nothing can replace that. If you're strapped for time and deciding between whether to do plyos/cardio or lift weights, I'd probably go for the plyometric workout. It more directly affects your game on the ice. As Herb Brooks said in Miracle "The legs feed the wolf". Ideally you can do both and get stronger, as well as improve your explosiveness and quickness on your feet. But we've had guys come in, really hit the weights and become muscle bound to the point where they lose flexibility and become worse at hockey. I've never seen a guy go at his plyometric and conditioning workout too hard and become TOO quick or explosive. Put it this way: you can't win the physical battle for the puck in the corner if it's not in the corner by the time you get there.

Matt Barth is running the tryout in Michigan. He is just a good friend of Travis's, he doesn't have anything to do with the team itself and sure doesn't offer any form of financial aid for the team, that's Travis Howe and Don Kirnan's buisiness (believe me, I know) and they would not have Matt relay that message.

Maybe your brother was just asked to tryout?

Man. That is going to be my goal in the gym. :o Would heavy squats help with the balance you get on the ice. I seem to fall down a lot.

Overall, if you've gotten your squat to a high weight, I would start explosive training with Olympic lifts. They work much better for sports application.
