Taping Hockey Socks

Recommended Posts

I apologize for this simple question, but if you don't need to tape your shin guards to keep them in place (if you use straps, for instance) is it necessary to still use tape to keep your socks up if you have velcro tabs on your shorts? Not sure which the tape is really for that I see around the shin guards on the outside of the socks.

it's personal preference. i notice that a lot of younger kids aren't using tape at all anymore. i'm kinda old school, so i tape my socks even though i don't really need it. basically, the tape is to prevent your shin guards from moving. if you've got good straps on them, there's really no need. i just like doing it. velcro on the jock is better for holding up socks than tape. every time i just tape my socks up instead of velcroing or wearing a garter, they seem to come loose.

in short, if you wear have straps on your shin guards and a jock short or garter belt, you don't really need tape, unless you like the way it looks.

Since the shin pads I use have two leg straps, I don't need tpae to hold them in place. I couldn't care less about my socks. I don't tape them at all. Since I switched to SP hockey socks I don't need to tape them to the velcro. The SP socks are longer than the ones from AK that I used to use.

So long as you've got something to hold up your socks (the velcro as you mention or a garter belt) then you don't really need sock tape for anything other than pulling your shin pads closer to your leg. Most pads these days have reasonable straps, so using tape will be a matter of personal preference - how tight do you want your shin pads to be?

Thanks for the great responses. I currently have the V10 shin pads and they stay in place very well, so my shinnys are plenty tight for me. The reason I asked is that I have been wearing sweat pants all this time instead of socks and figured it was time to make the leap. Chadd, is the SP in SP socks a brand name?

Yeah SP socks are great. I have a pair of AK for my one team and they are awful, falling apart after a few games.

My SPs are in excellent shape, plus only $5 from Rivercity Sports!

Yes, they had the AHL contract for the last couple years for jerseys and socks but next year they won't. Socks and jerseys become part of the RBK deal.

Of course they are longer, all the pro players are 7' or taller now! :D

I don't even need the pro length model, the regular sr size are long enough.
