JR Boucicaut 3803 Report post Posted June 4, 2005 The baseball draft isn't run or televised like other sports' drafts. I think it's done by conference call.

Kovy_Ribs_Fedo 3 Report post Posted June 4, 2005 Damn, 50 rounds is ridiculous.
Dangles 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2005 It's because they have 40 man rosters and need to fill positions. Plus they have lots of minor leagues. A, AA, AAA etc...
kosydar 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2005 A kid from my school is getting drafted. In talking to him, it seems like the draft is very unlike the hockey one, he said he has been told he could go anywhere from the 5-25th round. Still, its very impressive to see how many scouts came to our games this year.
Dangles 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2005 Is it just a gongshow, Kosy? If you have 50 rounds x 30 teams = 1500 players being drafted. No wonder why some many people dont make it the bigs ever.
kosydar 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2005 It really is. I remember a few years back a local kid got drafted in the late 40's and he hadn't even played baseball since he was in elementary school. He was a track star, and the team thought they could use him as a runner or something. I guess each team has a rookie camp where all 50 or however many of their draft picks go, and then each team will usually only sign 20-25 of them. Even though there are a lot of positions to fill in all of the levels, there isn't much turn around because there aren't a lot of people retiring each year.Plus the kid I know has a scholly to a good baseball school. Its different from hockey because you don't need an agent and you can still be considered an amatuer even if you enter the draft, as long as you don't sign. But if you don't sign and go to play college ball, you have to wait until after your junior year until you can be redrafted.

ladystorm3 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2005 one i guy i was watching went 32nd pick to colorado, and the other went 47th to boston, wich is crazy cuz they never really draft high school players
mack 44 Report post Posted June 8, 2005 Lots of roster spots to fill plus a lot of teams take fliers out on kids to try and get them to go pro instead of going to college. They'll just end up getting drafted again 3 years later.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted June 8, 2005 And this was just for US players isn't it? The international draft is held at another point in the year. I know there was talk of combining the drafts but I hadn't heard if that had happened yet.
mack 44 Report post Posted June 8, 2005 I still don't get how they can get int'l players when they're in their teens, even if most of them never pan out.
