Recommended Posts

do you guys think since that the nhl will change their rules that the rules will change in bantam , midget , junior & college, and beer leagues?

I would imagine most of the rule changes ultimately would end up in the lower leagues. As a matter of fact, some of them -- such as no-touch icing and two-line passes -- are already in the beer leagues. (I'm not sure about the kids' leagues.)

I just spoke to someone at the Atlantic District for USA Hockey last night and very few changes were made, none because of potential NHL changes.

The AHL, ECHL, other pro leagues and Canadian major junior will likely change within a few years to mirror the changes the NHL makes as they all consider themselves "feeders" for the NHL.

I'm assuming that some rules will trickle down, like automatic offsides (no tag up), came down as soon as it did in the NHL. I don't play youth hockey anymore, I play prep, so we go by NCAA. But there is no two line pass rule in youth hockey. Automatic icing has always been called for youth to speed up the game. I imagine if dimensions of the ice stuff change (blue lines), it will go through in the NCAA, similar to how the crease change has.

USA Hockey does not recognize the new crease design, that's always fun when you are supposed to call a player for being in the crease and the rink is painted with the NHL style crease.

Icing is called when it crosses the line for safety, not to speed up the game.

It's one thing to change 30 NHL rinks. It's something entirely different to change thousands of youth hockey rinks.

In Canada the provincial governing body determines some of the rules. This year was the first year that they decided not to use the 2 line pass rule. The games changed alot.

for high school hockey here in nova scotia, we've never used the red line, or at least as long as i can remember. i don't believe all changes will show up in minor hockey throughout the country. we still use the old size creases and whatnot. i can't see rinks changing their appearance because of the NHL
