New Steel

Recommended Posts

Quick question. I've just got my old perf. lightspeed steel replaced on my Bauer XX with regular lightspeed 2 steel. Does it take awhile to adjust to the new steel? There seems to be alot more blade and a noticeable height difference. Someone told me that my skating would be screwed up at the beginning. I have a big game coming up.

I always get the ends taken down a little bit and have them take a little steel off through the rest just to get them down a little.

Is it hard to get used to the height? Yeah my new steel looks incredibly high. The reason why I'm asking is that someone kept telling me that changing the steel before a big game is stupid. I figured it will only take a few minutes to get adjusted.

Anytime you have a big game, not smart to change anything, especially steel. It could take 20 minutes or more of skating to get use to it. Put your old steel back on for the game.

You wont notice it that much, its only gonnna be a few millimeters.

the only major difference you will notice will be a freshly sharpened skate, unless you got a new hollow, or radius on them.

Not true in most cases. New steel can be 1/2 inch higher and the toe/heel steel can significantly more. Bauer/Graf in particular. CCM not as much. I grind toes off a lot of skates because skaters have trouble adjusting to the additional steel.

i did the same thing as you, i changed my easton holders with some new lightspeeds and put them on my skates, i could skate the next game with the new steel but it felt as i was going slow and tight turns and other moves were diffacult. i had the toes and the heels grinded off after that game and it felt normal, i would suggest you try gettin the heels and toes grinded before your game.

lowering the toe and heel and shaving them so they look the same but grinding the heel isnt that great because it reduces your stability. just picture the steel on the heel as training wheels, when you get hit you keep your stability somewhat by the metal on the heel. if the metal on the heel is round off then you wont be as stable, especially if your a defenseman.

There are some guys around here who do that but they turn the steel into a banana. There's still 3/4" of steel in the middle but the ends are ground up into the holders.

Rounding off the toe will reduce stability as well. It's just a trade-off many people are willing to make.

yeah but if you just blend the toe so its even along the blade then thats fine, also depends on the sharpener doing the skates because some shops go toe heel, toe heel and over time that rounds off the blades over time
