Lemieux--

The real reason that dell sells computers for so cheap is that they start at those prices with crappy specs. 256 megs of ram, dvd-rom/cd-rw instead of a dvd+/-rw, 40 gb hd instead of 80 or 100, etc. By the time that you upgrade to the specs to equal those of a comparable model you'd see at bestbuy/circuit city/compusa, you're at just about the same price.

Building your own is the way to go anyways. Cheaper than Dell or any store...

As long as you aren't going to buy software it's cheaper than buying a new computer.

I agree with your explanation, 2048; it's true.

However, my comment about poor parts - and therefore, generally lower prices - still stands. I heard that tidbit in two different countries (well, when I was on vacation in the States and home in Canada).

i hope this works, as i didn't want to create a new thread, but my laptop got jacked from my dorm room a few days ago while i was gone brushing my teeth (5 days before the year was over and i was on my way home). anyways, now i need a new computer, which is kind of ironic as i was looking into upgrades for my existing one before it got jacked. i'm looking for a solid laptop that'll be able to play video games, such as company of heroes (which my old one barely could), and others. i'd like to stay under $2000 cdn, taxes in, and am just wondering if anyone has any opinions.

just to throw it out there, i had been looking at HP Pavillion that's on sale in future shop at the moment for 1100. i had looked at macbooks, but they seem to be more expensive than equal laptops of other manufacturers, and i heard they're not the greatest for gaming.

My suggestions: If you're going to be carrying it around a bit, don't get a big screen or widescreen. They're nice, but they're HEAVY. That big-ass screen also eats more battery. I've had a Dell Latitude D510 for almost three years, and it's just now starting to slow down a bit (need to wipe it clean and put XP Pro on it). I would hold out on Vista for a while, as there are still bugs with it, and it uses more resources than XP (you can get skins for XP that have the apple-esque launch bar and Yahoo! Widgets if you really want the look of Vista). I've enjoyed my Latitude, no problems. With Dell, it's not true that replacement parts are hard to find. I've been thinking of upgrading some things, and there are parts readily available on their website, fairly reasonable prices if you don't have to pay for the labor . My 2 cents

EDIT: Bad thing about the Latitude is the crappy video card... my laptop can barely run HL1. it's Pentium M 1.6 GHz, 512 MB DDR Ram, 60 gig HD, so it's not the ram or processor. It's an onboard graphics card, so it takes up my ram :(

AND

really sucks to hear your computer was jacked. Last year at my school, some assholes decided to go into open dorm rooms and steal laptops (even if the people were sleeping inside). Needless to say, my door was locked anytime i wasn't in the room.

My Inspiron 1150 is 2.5 years old and runs perfect- no problems ever. We have replaced a few newer Dell laptop motherboards where I work (for a computer company) for some of our clients though.

HP makes nice ones once again, but Dell usually has special financing available if you qualify (like 6 months same as cash).

only laptops i would stay away from is Compaq and HP. My wife had a HP crash on her, and when she brought it back, they told her that her warranty didnt cover that and she needed to pay $800 for a new hard drive.

Compaq - bad experience by me... key dropped off after a week, and they told me that they could fix the key, but would take them 3 days.

Am currently using my second Toshiba, they are great. The first toshiba i bought was back when I was in Uni (98-01)... and that Toshiba is still running today (pentium 1 266MHz, 3 GB HDD.)...

Used 2 Dells during my work, as thats what the company contracts out. Not too bad, just pretty slow I feel.

My neighbor just threw a water balloon at my laptop. Surprisingly it held up okay, so go for a Sony Vaio if you think you'll need water balloon protection.

I've had a Dell Inspiron 6400 for just over a year now, with no problems. Very satisfied with the product.

My sister got an Inspiron the same time I got my Latitude (summer 05), and she has had no problems with it so far. Her only gripe was that she didn't upgrade to a cd-rw or anything, it was just a dvd-rom in her computer, so when she decided she wanted to burn CDs she had to go get a backpack burner. If you end up with an Inspiron, make sure you upgrade the drive to what you want to have eventually, because I'm pretty sure you still can't pull the drive very easily (with my latitude I can pop it out and put in a different drive... floppy, dvd-rw, 2nd battery maybe?) Other than that, I've heard that the Inspirons are a pretty good comp, if you don't mind the extra weight from a widescreen.

only problem with dell and most mainstream manufactures is that they use cheap component parts which you have no control over. motherboard, media drive, memory, hd, etc.
