Penguins sign Palffy

Recommended Posts

damn, that's awesome. i knew they were going to get another forward, but i didn't think they'd go after someone like palffy. their offense is going to be insane. i guess they are banking on the new rules freeing things up. not that the young d coming up isn't bad. return of the early 90's pens run and gun!

lines could be like this

lemieux recchi crosby

palffy malkin malone

koltsov beech fata

a.roy/c. armstrong/talbot/endicott/kraft?

Gonchar/Tarnstrom

Jackman/Orpik

Whitney/Scuderi

Welch

Goal

Its gonna be either T-Bo, Cujo, Burke and obviously Fleury...

Who knows Morozov might sign too, but unlikely, Malkin is also questionable, but considering the caps signed ovechkin, the pens should be ok getting him...

I'm thinking they have a pretty good shot at a Cup run. Wouldn't that be crazy, the team with the first pick in the draft wins the Cup that year. That'd probably be a first.

Not sure on Recchi but Gonchar (5 years) and Palfy (3 years), both extend beyond the end of the lease at the civic arena.

You mean kinda like when they drafted Mario?

Maybe, I don't know as I wasn't exactly around at that time.

Just checked, and, were you being sarcastic? It appears they were 6th in the Patrick division that year, which I don't think is very good. I don't really know though as I don't know how big the Patrick division was. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Mario was in the 84 draft and they won the cup in 90-91 and 91-92. It was not a case of instant success.

Mario also came on to a HORRIBLE team, Patrick more built the team around 88-89 that ended up winning the cups.

I don't think people realize just how good Palffy is. When he isn't injured I think he's one of the best players in the game and the rule changes sure won't hurt him.

I think alot of people know how good he is. I haven't heard a bad word spoken about him.

Drafting Jagr and the trade with Hartford really helped as well.

Yep, bringing in Ulfie and Francis. Coffey coming in for 87-88, Recchi coming up in 89, Rob Brown, all those guys sorta came together in a three year span. It wasn't just drafting Mario, though he was the foot in the door.

That's when Patrick earned his reputation as a genius. Quite frankly he hasn't lived up to it since then and I really like the guy.

Patrick still makes a steal trade a year (Jackman for Berehowsky, Hedberg for a #2), but they're not like they used to be. I think he got a lot less for Jagr than he could have, same for Kovalev. They knew he was in a tough spot.

He had a better offer for Kovy from Toronto but had to take the Ranger offer that included more cash on orders from above, at least according to the rumors at the time.

pens are a great team right now but if you really look at it they haven't spent that much cash at all... i mean mario plays for next to nothing and crosby plays for like 900k... paffy for about 4.5m, gonchar for 5 mill... that is less then 12 million in 4 all star players. the rest of the team is nothing but bottom feeders from last year and you get a full team for less then 24 million i'm sure. these guys still have a TON of money to sign a good goalie and anything else they needed... if they went for the full cap which i'm sure the pens won't they'll win the cup for sure.

Having a possible first line making under 1 mill each has allowed them alot of space. They still need some D. They won't spend to the max, and there aren't enough D that they would need out there. Also you need to consider chemistry. Will it be good seeing there first 2 lines and top 4 D as guys who haven't really played there at all or alow in the last 2 years?

the rest certainly arent bottom feeders, its called young developing talent... I wouldnt mind having kris beech, konstantin koltsov, rico fata composing your third line. Koltsov and fata can both flat out fly.

Those bottom feeders finished the last 20 games of 2003-04 with a 12-5-3 record and had the #1 power play in the league during that span WITHOUT Mario in the line up.

Since then they've added Mario, Recchi, Palffy, Gonchar, Thibault, Crosby, maybe Malkin and lost no one of consequence except maybe Morozov depending if he decides to accept his qualifying offer. B)
