this site is great. i got the link from flyersphans.com. the info is invaluable so far. i am a pretty solid B- recreational player. grew up in philly but never played organized ice hockey. always played street hockey and later on, roller hockey. i switched over to ice exclusively about 6 years ago and loved the change. i have graf 704s but they are getting old. i need new skates eventually obviously. i live in phoenix now and we do not have one solid hockey shop. the kind of place where the employees really know their shit and have a good selection. i used to play with rob mclean from mission a while back and grill him about equipment(mostly skates). but i havent seen him in a while and dont wanna waste any more money. i bought 709s online last year and loved their quality but just could not get used to the size and bulkiness of the boot. sold 'em. i recently bought a pair of easton air sbx cheap, which are nice skates but, cant get used to them. my heel slips but i admit i didnt mold them in case i sold them. my 704s were my first serious pair of ice skates since i switched over from roller hockey. i love the way they feel. the only problem i had with them was the shallowness of the boot. i have a pretty high arch and my feet have sensitive tops. i split the laces and that problem was solved for the most part. i just am gun-shy now about buying skates online because you cant return them if you dont like them and you dont know if you really like them until you use them! a very expensive catch-22. i know there are some great skate gurus on here. i definately like the lighter skates. i obviously have gotten used to the forward pitch with graf and dont wanna screw up the gains i've made in skating with a new pitch. any ideas?

i have thought about that. i think i might try on the 705. i have a feeling it has the medium depth i like and still almost as light. are grafs still considered one of the best put together skates out there?

If you get a pair without problems they can be great, you just have to be very careful and make sure there aren't any visible problems. This like the holders mounted off center or the steel mounted in the holder at an odd angle.

i didnt know 705 had some defect probs.

I've seen it on 703s and 705s where I live.

Last two pair of Graf (703, 727)I sharpened had blades mounted with a bow in them. You could always get a different brand boot and have them profiled ala your Graf. I know it will be hard to find that service in your area. Just an idea.

rob is gonna be the equipment guy for the phoenix roadrunners this season. beyond that, i dont know. i was thinking about the missions. what exactly is the difference between the S series and the L? when you talk about heat molding, how much does the boot really mold to your foot?

Sorry for interupting but how do I know if the holders are off center? I just bought some 703s and I think the holders aren't mounted correctly. Will it affect my skating if they are crooked? Thanks.

You can usually tell just by looking at them. If the front of the holder isn't mounted in the middle of the toe, or the same with the heel, it's off line. Usually with Grafs the center line of the top cap is very close to the center of the boot.

It's my experience that a properly fitted skate will "mold" to your foot eventually even without heating. It just speeds the process up a few skates (results may vary).

It just makes it so you don't have to go through the breaking in process as long which sometimes can be painful. Welcome to the board btw

so what is the difference between the molding of Kor and the other brands? i checked their website. they only have one skate?

The only difference in baking is most of the boot is supposed to mold to your foot instead of just a couple of areas like some boots.

Thanks for the info Chadd. It looks like at least one of the holders is off center. I guess I'm going back to my LHS. But I doubt they'll want to do anything about it. Will I notice it when I'm skating?

Some people do, others don't. Personally, it bothers me when the steel is off. I'm not an elite player but the feel of my stuff is very important to me.

Maybe I'll play a few games in them and then go from there. Thanks again for your help.
