Need articles about "state of" NHL teams

Recommended Posts

In the past year, I've become good friends with Kerry Goulet, who is the Publisher of IceHockey World. It's been on the market just under a year, focusing on the professional leagues, and there's nothing quite like it. It's bold, colorful, glitzy and glossy.

Well, tonight he asked me if I'd help him by writing a couple of articles for the Season Preview issue. He needs write-ups on the offseason acquisitions and "state of" for each team. He said he doesn't have a network of writers since he's a fairly new magazine, so he asked me to write about the Bruins and the Avs. In talking further, I asked him if he minded if I posted this on MHS, since some of you guys are rabid about your teams.

In return, he'll give you a free subscription to the magazine; further, for those of you who might be considering journalism, you'd have a byline. Now, that said, I've seen how some of you write and I'm going to have to say that all words must be spelled out! :D

Last, I asked him if I could offer a discount to MSH members, even if they don't write an article, and he said yes.

I'd do the Leafs except A. I'm very far removed from the Toronto media and fan base. Hell, I barely know whats going on with them right now. and B. I'm going to be real busy starting college. Sorry I can't help you out.

Hi Mod squad,

I thank Jason for informing me about your fantastic forum. I have started a new NHL/Pro hockey magazine and have been affected by the lockout and now need some help in analyzing all the 30 NHL teams.

Jason, I have need for teams other than Toronto, Boston, Vancouver, Tampa, Colorado and Theo I will gladly take your offer for the Rangers. By the way I have just learned that Jagr has turned down the captaincy.

Anyone who is interested in writing, my needs for the preview issue are approximately 600 to 900 words in a Word format. If you have any concerns about your writing skills, we have a professional hockey editor to polish your work!

By the way, I will visit the site more often as I feel I have unique insight on professional hockey. I played 17 years in Germany and acted as a player/coach and General Manager for several of those years. I am well connected with the Hockey Hall of Fame through Ron Ellis, and up until last week skated this summer with Jim Thomson and several other present day NHL players such as Gary Roberts, Eric Lindros, Steve Thomas, Curtis Joseph and more. I look forward to your comments and exchanging hockey stories!

Too bad the Canucks are taken :(

I could write about my beer league team :D Oh, that's right "Pro" hockey...well I guess those guys are a little better.

Like jjtt99, if you needed articles about elite-level beer drinking I would have a few.

What if we wanted to write about fan reactions to events in certain cities / regions?

e.g. it would be interesting to see how fans in Boston vs. LA react to the new rules.

Kevin, I think Kerry would accept any help given.

I spoke to him this morning and he said the more he thought about it, the more he was glad I suggested this to him. He said his original intention for the magazine was to have it written from a fan's perspective, versus five freelancers rewriting the same article for different magazines. Well, I would venture that there are no more rabid hockey fans than all the guys who visit this site eight times a day.

Regarding your particular idea for an article, if I understand it correctly, wouldn't we have to wait until after the games have started? If so, perhaps it could be an article for the second issue of the season.

Too bad the Canucks are taken

JJ, depending whether people become too busy, he still might be able to use your help. Besides, it turns out the guy who volunteered for the Canucks is actually a front-running Lightning fan, eh Greg? B)

I'm kicking around the idea of doing a write up for Minnesota. What's the dead line?

He's not sure yet. The original deadline is ASAP, but he's kicking around the idea of coming out a week or two later, because then the rosters are set.

For instance, I'm going to write about the Bruin's. Right now, Raycroft and Boynton aren't signed. If the deadline is extended until the 30th -- just making that date up -- then we'd have a better idea whether the B's enter the season with Hannu Toivonen as the starting goalie.

Hi Guys, thank you for your great response!

The deadline for articles are Sept 24. I could use some of the teams earlier as I need to format each page. The rosters will be placed last just before print time. We will have the most up to date roster page of all preview magazines. Also I want to have the new players in their new uniforms. I just recieved Brian Leetch in his Bruins uniform and he looks fantastic!

Also, if you use it do I get to see my name in print?

According to what Kerry said yesterday...yes.

He even said there could be an organization listed under your name, so you could have MSH listed.

Actually, MSH can't be used without permission.

Sorry

Thanks guys.

You can be listed anyway you want. Add an email address for comments or a website. If MSH allows you to use these letters it is okay with me but ONLY with permission from Chadd and/or JR.

I was by the Leafs practice today and Lindros looks very good as does Steve Thomas!

Did Allison skate? I heard he left his first practice after 3 minutes.

Kosy,

Kerry's on the road today, but I told him he's left his Leafs fans hanging! He said he'll try to log on tonight.

Anyway, he said Allison tweaked his groin but he was back at the second practice, so it was minor.

Still need to know where to send the article.

Rusty,

You can email to Kerry: goulet29@29sports.com

The Lindros situation was not as bad as everyone made it out to be. Heated heads but quick back to hockey business. Steve Thomas scored in the intersquad game and looks good.

Rustybender, thanks for a great story about the Wild. You hit the concept right on. I would like to know about each teams strengths and weaknesses througn a passionate fan. Aquistitions and missed aquisitions are really interesting and of course a prediction of where the team will be at the end of the season.

Hey Kerry,

I just got off the phone with Jason and he wanted me to drop a line here to let you know that I have Colorado covered. Expect the article in your email in a few days.

Hey thanks guys for all your help!

I need several teams covered and will list them tomorrow.

I am looking for a summary of each teams with strengths and weaknesses and where the will finish in the new look NHL. Include acquistions and failed acquition and add where the management should look to improve.

Once again thank you so much for the great response.

I was at the Flyers - Thrasher game. Primeau looked great and Simon Gagne was stellar. Mike Richards looks like he is going to be a keeper. Thrashers were missing a bunch of the big boys and battled hard but lost 8-6.

Keith stated that he loves the look of the Flyers and that the team unity is already tight!

Hey, does anybody know of any website that lists transactions by date? I'm writing the Bruins preview and I remember they let a number of players sign elsewhere after 2004 without really counteroffering, then they lost out on Gonchar and let some others walk (I think) after the CBA. I really hate sportswriters who don't check their facts, so I don't want to be a hypocrit.... :D

I've checked the Bruins' website and the NHL's, but I'm only finding current information, not a list of what happened on July 17th. I know I can try to piece some of the information together by reading the Free Agent thread, but I was hoping to find an encompassing website. I'll probably head over to ESPN, but if anyone knows something, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

EDIT: ESPN's a good start for anyone writing a preview. They have a transactions page, ESPN NHL Transactions, and towards the top right is a drop down list for each team. It only goes back to the start of free agency, but that's a big help.
