Opening night

Recommended Posts

On Monday, the NHL.com website had a posting that OLN was going to be providing the viewing of their opening night to all cable providers across the country to allow those with just the basic cable package, the ability to watch the games. They said that this was being done in order to hopefully increae viewersihp, interest, etc. Anyway, it also said to contact your local cable provider for more information on where and how to find the telecast. Well, I just called my local provider and they didn't have a clue. I went back to NHL.com and looked up some of the archived news articles for the past few days and couldn't find it. Was I dreaming or did anyone else see that article, too?

Does your cable company carry OLN?? I think I saw that article also. I have Direct TV and Oln is part of my programing, but I don't think my local cable company carries it. That could be your problem.

You're right. OLN is making opening night available to all cable/satellite companys. Center Ice is also having a free preview if you're a satellite or digital cable subscriber.

Ultimately it's the individual cable companys' decision to actually carry OLN's coverage tonight. There really isn't any compelling reason for a cable company to go to all of the trouble to offer this game if OLN isn't on their current line up. If OLN is offered by your cable company on a higher service tier, you may get the game. Of course, you may also not be able to get the game if you are a basic cable subscriber without a convertor box. This is due to the passive frequency filter traps placed on cable lines to filter out premium channels.

Good luck!

It's not available to people who live in a forest :D

We have some trees but not really a forest. It's actually more like the prairie. :P

OLN is offered on a tier package for our digital programming. So I just kind of expected them to put this "special programming" on one of their "off" channels that we have that generally show local shows (kind of like Wayne's World type of shows). I don't have a box, so I may not be able to get it. That sucks! I was hoping to be able to watch tonights broadcast and then when I return from out of town, next week, upgrade and then get Center Ice.

I think the forest comment was directed at me. I was supposed to have Dish installed with Center Ice this weekend, but the installer said I have too many friggen trees. Ugh!

Thanks, I wondered what that meant. Anyway, my cable company called me back and said that they are not providing the free viewing and the only way to watch would be if I had the upgraded cable with one of the tier packages. Since I don't, it looks like I'll be missing out the first week and just catching the highlights. That is, if ESPN still shows them!

20 minutes of Yankees, 15 minutes of Red Sox, 10 minutes for the other baseball, 10 minutes of commercials and 5 minutes for 15 hockey games.

I guess I've got it rough...platinum seats at the Oil's home opener :D

..but really, I can't imagine getting 5 minutes of hockey a night, that would kill me.

Wish I could watch the games tonight. Unfortunately, I have a game in Buffalo tonight, which will be keeping me away from a TV all night.

Unfortunately, living in one of the biggest markets in the US, I cannot watch my Rangers tonight. Laughable.

Even people who paid extra for cablevisions "sport package" with OLN say it is blacked out at the moment. Although after phone calls they say the game will be watchable. We will see.

Odd, is the game not sold out?
