All White Pads

Recommended Posts

well some of the guys and i are trying to convince our ever so unreliable netminder, who is in the market for new pads, to go all white. when i worked retail we did a custom pair of vaughns that were all white with only the word "vaughn" in hartford green, very sharp IMO. he has been over here with me looking around at the eagle, vaughn, and rbk webpages and we both agree that rbk's custom site is the best, even though it is sub par. so i guess im asking if anyone has any model all white, pics of all whites, know of pros, or anything of that nature to post them up, thanks, mike

The goalie from Hartford had some vaughns (I think) with just a bit of red on them. I think his name was Holt.

Peter Skudra when he was on the Canucks had almost all white Eagle pads with a strip of blue and silver at the top. http://hockeygoalies.org/bio/images/skudra.jpg

and also Artus Irbe while with the nucks had white pads.

Didn't Irbe have all white pads all the time? I remember seeing them when Carolina made their play-off run a few years back.

yeah, they were all white, and always looked really really old, apparently he changes pads once every 5 years or something like that, and they always looked too big for him

I've never bought Smith nor Battram Equipment. But if I was in the market I'd definitely be torn between the two. I currently wear Vaughn Velocity's with the Trevor Kidd graphic from when he played with the Florida Panthers. Just different colours. See Avatar. <<<

IMO the Velocity is the King of all goalie pads ever made. (and I've tried many) Perfect balance and rotation. Scott Battram makes some good looking Velo clones and has some really neat design features available. Pete Smith designed the Velo for Vaughn and has since gone on to tweak that design even further under his own name.

So essentially with a Battram or Smith you get a Velocity pad, with built in performance improvements, at a fraction of the price of the Vaughn....

Again. All of this is just my opinion. Every goalie is different and likes/dislikes different things about different pads. I would suggest to any goalie to try out as much gear as you can get your hands on to see what works for you before plunking down that kinda money on a new or custom set. Unfortunately, the reality is, that isn't always an option so you need to get as much information from others as you can...research, research, research.

My wife (chickwithastick) would tell you, I tried many sets/brands over the past few years before settling on my current velos. The models/brands I didn't try, I was able to determine from past experience that particular features on that pad ensured that I wouldn't like it. Again the moral to this story is, know what it is you are looking for. Gather as much information as you can, analyse your own playing style and determine what features best fit your game.

Might be a good topic for another thread. "What do you look for when selecting new pads"....

im sorry for my ignorance, but why would anyone want white pads?

is it just for pure aesthetics?

wouldn't it be better if it was all black to match the colour of the puck and so if a rebound is loose, it'll be harder for the opposing team to find the puck? having said that, same can be said to the goalie's team as well...

Sutdies show that What pads look bigger and fool players. They show that Black pads look smaller and wil cause players not to shoot low. And the ref may not blow the whistly because he may beleive he see's the puck in your Pure black pads.

There are two basic trains of thought with goalie gear:

White = boards, netting, ice etc.

This creates a camouflage effect. Shooter can't tell where the goalie ends and the net begins. Therefore the shooter shoots it right into the waiting goaltender.

Bright Colours/Flashy Graphics = draw the eye.

Rule of thumb: The shot goes where you look. Therefore, draw the eye to the gear and the shooter shoots it right at the goalie. :D

Which one works? Does either one work?....who knows.
