How was everyones GPA for the first semester? I managed to pull out an A and 4 B's for my first semester. I didnt have "slouch" classes either for the most part.

I got my A in Intro to business and my other classes were Sociology,Algebra,Business Law, and Macro economics.

Do you think a 3.2 GPA will get me into any of the places I applied like Pitt and Penn State, or is it more or less how they feel about you as a person? I want to transfer next year instead of getting my associates here at home, cause I hate the community college I'm at. But, considering I know for a fact I didnt try or study all that hard (mistakenly) I'm hopin to pull it up a couple points for this spring semester. Anyways, hope everyone enjoys their break and the holidays, its tequila night!

98% average... whatever 3. or 4. etc. that averages out to at this new school I don't know...

I know man, its a pain in the ass trying to transfer after only 2 semesters. Its kinda like I'll be "in the middle" of everything I'm doing class wise. I just really dislike the place. Oh well, I'm hoping for the best.

Senior year was a burner for me. I got accepted for a full ride to UNC chapel hill for soccer, but my knee blew out and messed up that career. I also got accepted to Penn State. I love every minute of it up there. B)

Filling out 3 apps right now for Gr. 9, trying to transfer to a new Prep School. Between Midterms right now, Hockey, Lacrosse training and getting these 3 applications filled out by myself and my teachers I don't know what to do.

I would have given anything to grow up in an area where hockey was a way of life and kids played it in high school. You guys need to quit your complaining (I'd say the b word but I don't know if these forums are monitored for cuss words). For the dude who is going to choose between playing juniors or college --- if you are not good enough/big enough to go pro, go with a college that you can play for... get out of school as quick as you can and start life with your college degree. By the time you're my age you will be ahead of the pack. I'm 29 and lots of people who I went to HS with are living crappy lives. I went to the University of Washington in Seattle. Although I did play with the UW B team (I sucked - I had just started playing), it was a blast and it was just a rec team. I can only imagine how much fun a real team at a college would be.

if he plays jr a and not major junior, he can still go to college after, and playing jr a better offer for $$

I admit I don't know much about how the major junior / major a stuff goes, but the sooner you can get your college degree, the better you will be. Unless you're good enough to be a professional sports player, then it is not good to go to college - you'll make more money going pro immediately. I saw an article in SI a few years ago that talked about this for guys going pro in basketball - the kids who skipped college ended up making 10 million more than the ones who did... but if you can't go pro, then it's the other way around.

I don't agree. I have seen a lot of kids (both hockey players and normal students) show up on campus at 18, have no clue what life, hard work, direction, etc. is, and piss away their first 1 or 2 years of college either drinking, being homesick, whatever, all because they simply weren't ready for it. Some kids are fine at 18, a LOT of them could use a year or two of growing up.

A year after high school (we'll use junior hockey since it's the relevant example right now) can give a kid a lot of perspective on life in general. In that year he can experience a lot of things, see some new places, possibly figure out a little more about what they want to do with their lives. All while not burning $20,000+ on tuition, screwing up his transcript and drinking himself a gut. And the payoff for being a legitimate junior hockey player (USHL, NAHL, EJHL or Tier II Canadian) is very rewarding, whether it be a scholarship or even just an opportunity to play college hockey, and then possibly pro. From someone who's done and seen it, it's worth it. And yes, you may graduate college at 24, but there's really no difference in starting a 9 to 5 at 22 or 25 when you look at the big picture. And I guarantee you those 2-3 extra years will be some of the best times of your life. And as for going pro immediately, unfortunately hockey is a sport where that rarely happens - most kids can't even play college hockey right out of high school. 18 year old pro rookies are rare, and ones who stick around even moreso.

On the flipside though, taking a year or two off for junior needs to be taken into perspective. If you're not playing legit junior hockey, and you're a 20 year old playing crap Jr. B like the Empire or Continental, etc. hockey league, it's time to move on and sign up for community college.

i know 2 kids that got drafted to the mlb this year directly out of high school.

they most likely have it made for life, unless they get injured.

Hey I'm not saying it wouldn't be fun to go play and yes I agree that if you don't have the mindset for college, do something else until you do. But if you are someone who is focused, get it done and over with. The 2-3 years actually do make quite a bit of difference. If you're making 50k+ a year, that's an extra 150k or more after 3 years that you have/spent on stuff that your buddies who fiddled around for a few years before going to college have.

My advice to most of you who are in HS or looking to go to college. The chances that you will make it past college hockey are very slim, especially given the amount of college grads in the NHL right now. I had an opportunity to play Junior A after my senior year or I could have taken a full scholarship to Purdue University. I thought long and hard about where my hockey carrer was headed and after most college coaches told me that the good schools really only look at you if you played Juniors or prep, I decided to go to school. College is hands down the best 4 (4 1/2 in my case) years in your life. Even if you don't get a scholarship, go to college. I am now in the working world and live in FL and just bought a house. My company is also paying me to get my masters degree in electrical engineering. So trust me, go to college above playing hockey. Most school's have club teams and some are actually pretty good.
