Mission S500 questions

Recommended Posts

Thinking about buying a pair of these on the cheap, but I'm wondering if they would be unsuitable for an intermediate level skater ? I don't want to buy too much skate.

Also - when you adjust the pitch on the holder, would you want to get the steel recontoured ?

Enjoy them. I'm very much an intermediate/rec skater and am a liteweight, but they've been great. (FWIW, I've got grey superfeet in mine...)

The one thing to watch out for is weakness in the tendon guard (evidently only in the 2004 model). See

this thread.

Just be sure to unlace completely (removing the lace from at least the first two eyelets) so your foot can slip out.

Kinda a old topic, but I have some questions about the s500 durabiltiy. Im on my 3rd pair of S series mission skates. I know this has been fixed, but the tendon guard always rips, it has on all 3 pairs. And Im not a D who sits on his heals all the time and stretches them out. Secondly, the rivets have come loose on both pairs of my s500s and my s400s. I never had this problem with my XV's even though i hated the fit, and I havent seen many of my teammates have a rivet problem either. Finally, the Pitch bolt that sits under the heel always seems to get tweaked or bent. Or at least it has happened on my both of my pairs of s500's. My pitch now sits at a +1/2. Its between N and +1. I was wondering if any of you other S series users have had these problems? Do the new pitch bolts (square) seem more durable? Thanks.

The tendon guard will rip if you put your weight back on it or you use it to pull your skates off. The only way it can rip is if there is force put directly on it. Having a shoe shop add a piece of reinforcement prevents any problems and cost me $10 a boot.

Any boot with a plastic sole will require you to have the rivets re-set every so often. It takes about a minute once every couple months to get them all snug.

I've only seen the plastic bend around the pitch bolt like you have had and it's an indication that you have a lot of weight and force on the heel.

I always take off my skates like a shoe. I never pull on the tendon guard. Thanks for the info on the rivents and the outsole. I didnt know that. Also, about the bolts. it looks like the plastic has been chewed up pretty good in there too. Is the bent bolt a indication of bad skating style. Becuase Ive useually been told my style is pretty good. Or is it that im just hard on my edges or fat? Im about 6'1'', 195ish.

I'm 6-1 225 so it's not the weight. I've never seen a bent bolt, do you keep them tight?

Tight? From the ankle up there as tight as they can be. My teamates notice and comment on how tight i tie my skates. Also its not a bent bolt. Its very hard to explain. Its that little male part of the bolt that goes into the female part of the blade when you would change the pitch setting. Thats the part that gets bent.

Sold ! Thanks JR.

postscript: too bad these things are so ugly, to my eyes anyways, but for $200 CDN it's hard to complain.

Ya, i always thought they would have sold better had they looked a like a more tradional skate- design.

Anyways - whered you pick them up for 200$-- National Sport?

Ben

P.S Maybe someone can Photoshop in the photoshop thread a pair of S500 skates looking like a graf 705 black with a small mission m1 dark blue trim -- i always thought that would look killer.

I think i did a pretty good job of making sure they were tight.

That was my only guess as to why they were chewed up.

Chadd, you read my edited post ^, its not really the bolt its that little male part on it that gets bent.

A new bolt should fix that problem. I haven't seen that part get bent. If I had a spare I'd send it to you but I don't have any.

when i was skating on my kors, they had the pitch holder on them and i snapped the back bolt wehn i went into the boards. jr told me that it would happen to any bolt if you go into the boards that hard so i guess it wasnt a defect. besides that ive never had any problems with the pitch holders.
