Squirrel 0 Report post Posted January 5, 2006 ;) Thats interesting. Meh, whatever. I still find hockey the most exciting.
Fire0nIce228 1 Report post Posted January 5, 2006 yeah watching them pass the ball around at mid field for 45 minutes is great..they're games are always 1-0 or 2-1 so why did hockey need to up the scoring so much. Soccer is about as exciting as basketball.
dustedvinyl 0 Report post Posted January 5, 2006 I find the whole premise of scientists researching and then telling us what the most exciting sport is way beyond humorous. Why of course, who knows more about sports then scientists? I wonder if the scientists factored in flying flares, bottles, riots, angry mobs climbing fences, murders, stadiums burning down during games, fans crushed rushing gates, injured players writhing on the ground and then being hauled off on stretchers only to return five minutes later under their own power, no offense, the ridiculous number of one name mullet hair players etc into their equations? Don't get me wrong... I find soccer, err, football veeeeeeery exciting. Especially knowing I could die just watching it. Wheeeee!
donkey87 0 Report post Posted January 5, 2006 I prefer sports where the action and excitement happens on the field/ice/court.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted January 6, 2006 I think basing the decision only on the outcome and not on the action skews the results. That said, it's probably impossible to scientifically quantify excitement in any other way.
fatwabbit 93 Report post Posted January 6, 2006 well, i guess I gotta say something about that... been playing soccer basically all my life, representing school and state... inline hockey i only picked up about 10 years ago. I enjoy playing both emmensely, and now i play both on weekends.. sometimes to the point that I am near puking.. i find both to be really fun, and both are exciting as well. It also depends on who you are playing with. The guys I play soccer with are all of a different race than I am, and we trash talk each other basically the whole time. I must admit that some soccer games are really boring, but you should watch how some of the big clubs in Europe play. Skip the leagues from Italy (too predictable), German (very defensive game). Watch some from the English Premier League and the Spanish or Portugese Leagues... those are where some of the bigger clubs are... btw they are also paid a sh!tload of money... some guys get $100,000 pounds a WEEK! Eazy_b97 1 Report post Posted January 6, 2006 I think alot of soccer's popularity comes from the lack of funding it needs to play. In order to play the sports they compared it with, you need some cash. Soccer requires some resources, but not nearly as many. In general, you enjoy watching the sports you play, because it's cheap, alot of people can play soccer and thus alot of people get into it and enjoy it. Project_2501 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2006 Other than sculling, and sailing, hockey is probably one of the most expensive sports.A shell for sculling (Vespoli Single) = 11kA Vanguard 420 ~ 5k (I think, if not higher)Hockey Gear ~ 1k said and done for all good stuff.Soccer ~ $40 for a ball and a street to play in.Having fun = Priceless.(Had to add that...) I would seriously rather watch paint dry. Its all HyPe IMO, Between the faking injurys for "Free Kicks" and the huge wages they get i just cant stand it! I live in the Uk so Soccer/Football is very big over here. To be honest i did like it up untill i found the GoD of all sports (Ice Hockey) :D Now i just see the sport for what it is.............. HYPE! and men faking to be hurt! Its a joke!

Soccer is about as exciting as basketball. My thoughts exactly. It's hilarious...it's kinda like watching dogs chase their own tails.Soccer violence is unreal. It's entertaining, but christ, chill out guys. You don't need to cap a guy for accidentally scoring on his own team. EDIT: Basketball - $40 for a nice grippy ball and a schoolyard. I mean, c'mon, who needs shoes? What are you? A pussy?!
dustedvinyl 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2006 Aside from a bunch of scientists holed up in New Mexico (were they threatened by the "real" Mexico to do this study?) telling me soccer is exciting I find the people who keep saying the "sport" is the "next big thing" in this country hilarious. It's been the "next big thing" for as long as I can remember. Yes I'll admit there are tons and tons of kids playing the sport but then they grow up to be right thinking productive adults and members of society. Now if you're an adult out there playing the game, getting some excersise and/or trying to meet so and so's wife's sister I can respect that and at least say your trying to do something to stay in shape. But if you're one of those fervent left wing, soccer flag waving, pointing your finger nutjobs telling me it's taking over the world and the US is next well I need to tell you something.... You're wrong. You can make any argument you want I'm still going to look at you the same way I look at a guy driving a Miata. Now I may come across as a "soccer hater" and that, while close, is not completely true. I love the passion (usually fed by mass consumption of Stella Artois) of the European game and fans. Sometimes I can even watch up to five or even six minutes of a match... IN A ROW! Then, I realize I'm watching soccer and there's a good bet there's something more interesting and exciting on... like fishing, the worlds strongest man competition or even the WNBA. Maybe someday I'll change. Maybe someday I'll have children of my own and the little ones will come home from school with a soccer ball. Hopefully it will because they stole and deflated it from the other kids just like mommy and daddy taught them before we head to the rink... to play hockey. (I should say I keep having a nightmare of my future kids coming home with figure skates... THAT would totally change my mind about soccer)
delpiero81 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2006 Soccer ~ $40 for a ball and a street to play inSoccer - $0. All you need it's two feet and a ball made by tape rolled... It's strange i live in a country where soccer it's a religion but if i'm watching on tv a big soccer match and then changing channel i find a hockey game (even if is stupid team vs idiot team) well you know what i will watch...For the article, soccer unpredictable?Please... bobbyorio 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2006 All you've to do is look at the Champions League final from last year.Couldnt beat the second half for excitement and a totally unpredictable outcome in the final of the biggest club competition around.Someone mentioned the players get up to $100,000 a week.Nowadays its more like $175,000 a week. This is what Rio Ferdinand was on when he went looking for a raise! To justify it look at the size of the crowds for some games upwards of 100,000 in Spain and the number of games they play. roadrunner 12 Report post Posted January 6, 2006 I find this type of research bogus. However, being a competitor in both sports I do find Soccer more exciting to watch and equally exciting to play. The NHL has been so dull to watch. For the first time last night(Canada VS Russia) in a long time I have enjoyed a hockey game. I enjoy the fact that a squad whether Juventus,Madrid,Barcelona has to struggle to overcome a mid table squad. You really got to understand the tactics and formation each team puts forth when facing different styles of play and that's why Champions League is most exciting followed by World Cup. Even though the Italian league is at times boring the anticipation for these games is far more extraordinary than even an NHL playoff game. This may be due to a whole community following soccer like a religion or/and more stadium capacity. You think Montreal vs Toronto is big. Try any city rival in soccer for ex. Celtic/Rangers Roma/Lazio Inter/Milan and so on. Unfortunately with increased fan support and hatred for rival supporters it often turns ugly. Passion for soccer is unrivelled in any other professional sport, It's the beautiful game, a working class man's game which most people are. It unites the world whether you live on an island in the Caribbean, in Scandinavia, Africa. dustyvinyl-I don't know what your way of looking at people who drive Miata's supposed to mean. Cheechoo 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2006 But if you're one of those fervent left wing, soccer flag waving, pointing your finger nutjobs telling me it's taking over the world and the US is next well I need to tell you something.... You're wrong. In case you hadn't noticed, soccer has already taken over the world (with the exception of North America) for a long time. As someone said earlier in the thread, you like to watch the game you play and everything else (including "scientific studies") is irrelevant. I grew up in Europe and love to play and watch soccer. Same with hockey. But even though I've been in the US for about 15 years, I still can't sit through more than about 5 minutes of an American football game without falling asleep (too little action, too much standing around), but I'm sure if I grew up playing it, I'd love it. You're wrong. In case you hadn't noticed, soccer has already taken over the world (with the exception of North America) for a long time. I know the it's taken over the rest of the world... my point is it hasn't here in the US and never will from a professional standpoint. I promise to stop dissing footy at least until the US gets pounded in their group at world cup.
Cheechoo 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2006 I'm not so sure that they will get pounded. Yeah, they are in a really difficult group, but ever since the last world cup, the US has been playing some pretty good soccer. I think they'll be able to upset one or two power houses. LetsGoWings13 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2006 I duno outside of north america when soccer is on a huge majority of the country just stops to watch. I personally love to watch soccer but only if the teams are very good otherwise its horrible to watch. For people who dont think soccer is exciting try watching a game or two in the world cup where the stakes are so high the soccer games are very exciting. Haha, I've heard of it along with the Ford Probe being very popular among the gay community.I think USA has a good chance to come out of the group stages. I sure hope Italy pounds them though. But I'm a bit threatened by them. They've improved greatly since 94.
