thejackal 46 Report post Posted May 12, 2004 When was it first used and who invented it? I know that Kurri used to do them back in the day and I remembered seeing Soviet D-men in Miracle shooting off cross ice passes too (then again it might be untrue)
Chadd 916 Report post Posted May 12, 2004 It's been around as long as hockey has been played, though when they began permitting forward passes I'm sure it increased in frequency.

Since most one-timers are taken off of side to side or back passes, I don't think allowing forward passes contributed to more one-timers.

Since most one-timers are taken off of side to side or back passes, I don't think allowing forward passes contributed to more one-timers. I can see some longer passes not being made across the ice in fear of it being called a forward pass. The forward pass also allowed players to create a greater amount of open space on the ice making it easier to find passing lanes across the rink and back for one timers. Though I agree that very few one timers are taken off of a pass from behind. Curved sticks made it easier to shoot off of the pass as well and was another large factor in players taking more on-timers
thejackal 46 Report post Posted May 12, 2004 Plus slap shots were only invented in the 50's. I saw the goal Guy Lafleur scored in 79 on the famous "too many men" penalty and he shot it right off a drop pass after crossing the blue line.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted May 12, 2004 It doesn't have to be a slapper to be a one timer.
