I have had good experiences with my iBook to date (2 of them)

if you want complete care type protection you have to go through CompUSA and pay for their TAP program ...but I still like AppleCare...

I use my mac at home at times and on on the road and a PC at the office, I had some familiarity with a Mac before my purchase which helped..but I love Tiger ...its a great OS (You'll see it when Windows launches Vista..haha..) and things like the Private Browsing feature on Safari is a plus for me..battery life of 4 hours is better in most areas.

I had a Dell Inspiron..but it was just too heavy to travel with...(8+lbs for a 15" screen)

of course if you had to have a Windows machine..you could wait and get an Intel Duo type of iBook when it comes out in the coming months...

good posts on this stuff on the NYTimes circuits section from David Pogue

Check out dealsea.com for coupon codes and whatnot. I got a dell inspiron E1505 a couple weeks ago and used a $600 coupon code. There are new deals daily, so check it often. I sound like an infomercial

Yes this is an old thread, but nows crunch time, back to school sales, etc... so i'm looking hard for one. I have in mind either the Macbook or some others. There are some HP ones at Staples for a great deal, just want to know what HP laptops are like. I am using a Media Centre desktop and have had no problems with it.

I have a MacBook (pro at least) and I like it, but have you checked Best Buy? I've seen Sony Vaios there on sale and that was the last PC laptop I had and I liked it a lot.

Here in Nova Scotia we don't have the Best Buys, but we have Futureshop and Staples (around me atleast). I checked out some Sonys, but were a bit more expensive then the HPs but the HPs still had more stuff on them.

I bought a Vaio from BB last summer. I ended up saving $300, plus I love the computer.

hp makes crap notebooks. Ever since the compaq merger they have been terrible (and hp didnt make great books to begin with). sony makes solid notebooks, but I would go with an IBM if you are going PC instead of a mac.

they just make crap products. I have had a couple armadas from compaq and they all were plauged with problems. Fan failures, mobo failuers, and a bunch of other problems. Thei QC just blew. Their customer service was top notch though. But this was years ago. I had an HP laptop years ago and it also just was not up to my (very stringent) standards.

From past experience, I would go with a Dell.

If you really want to save some money, in the US, Dell sells product in their own Dell outlet. I'm not sure if Dell Canada has this option though. The inventory is always changing, all models are previously ordered new, scratch and dent, or refurbished. Depending on which model you want, you can get really great deals at certain times of the day.

I wouldnt go with a dell. I am on a dell notebook right now, and it just feels like crap. It just is not well made. It is HUGE and clunky.

I am in the Apple camp as well, having used both PC/Mac platforms for different workgroups the past 6 years..

Dell's run as hot if not more than iBook/MacBook (and you've never seen an apple catch fire!)...it was also prone to keys breaking and I travel a lot but am pretty easy on my gear...

on the PC side the Lenovo is a good choice..but with Tiger and the upcoming Leopard the OS is a lot less stressful in my experiences

I got a toshiba last year before school and it has been absolutely amazing. lightweight, portable, etc. had no problems with it at all but in the end as long as you take good care and be careful with it all computers being mentioned here will last for you.

Myself and a lot of my friends own HPs and love them. I have never owned a different brand but I have seen no real problems with it. Plus they are well-priced.

Excatly what i said. I know a few people who own HP notebooks and love them, aswell as desktops and love them. Here they are very well priced as of late, and they have excatly what i was looking for. So thats where im leaning to right now.

Edge: What model of HP notebook do you have?
