QandA

When your dad's the coach

Recommended Posts

So, my dad's coached me mostly throughout minor hockey and such, and our high school isn't the most encouraging team to attract coaches so my dad stepped in two years ago and did it. In those years, my brother was an assistant in grade 11, and captain in grade 12, both which he really deserved. This year my dad stepped down and another father came in, his son deservingly got the C and I got an A. I'm in grade 11, and all other captains are grade 12. Next year, my dad was thinking of coming back to coach, but if he's coach and I get the C, I'll be once again told "you go it because your dad's the coach." It'll be my 5th year next year, and I've given this weak team everything I have in hockey, including turning down an invitation to go to our rival school who I get to watch in the playoffs which we didn't make. What's your guys' take on the situation?

tell them exactly what you just said....and then say and who else speaks out as much as I do and so on, if they tell you you do something wrong, ask if they did it right. I may be wrong on this but whatever...

I would refuse to take the C. I guess I'd take an A if I felt everybody else was complete shit but I wouldn't want to. In peewees I was put in the same situation, although my dad told me that he wouldn't even think of me for the position. Back then I thought it was stupid and I didn't understand it, but now I think its always the right thing to do. Regardless of how the team feels, it also looks really shitty when look on a scoresheet and see Head Coach: Kosydar, Joe RW: Kosydar, Brian ©. You don't have to be the captain to be a leader on the team, and I think that in a situation like this your teammates will respect you more if you take your name out of the running.

If a coach is choosing captains, he should be looking for a lot of input from the players. I'd rather see teams vote on captains, but if the maturity level isn't there it can just turn into a popularity contest. When a coach unilaterally appoints someone captain (especially if it is his own child), there can be a lot of resentment within the team about the choice.

Does your dad have to be the coach? I dont like my dad being coach not because I cant be captain, I wouldnt want to or I shouldnt be but because it affects my time out on the rink. In highschool and travel playing time is a big deal and father coaches may get criticized for over playing their son even if they should be out there.

If you deserve it, know what's going to happen, and let it roll off your back. Don't let it bother you. My dad coached me from mites to pee-wee, so I know where you're coming from.

It was actually unfortunate for me, because every week when we announced our rotating captain in squirts (we had no captains in mites or pee-wee), I would never get it, even though I was the one working hard every night in practice. Although, I remember the one time I was, it was the last stretch before the state tournament, so I guess he had a plan, and I led well, because we won both games that weekend. (West Haven and Greenwhich! )

-Maybe it was a good thing though, I might have stopped working if I got captaincy before the season was almost over.

I think the worst thing is when the coaches son gets the C and doesnt deserve it. On one of my hockey teams i scouted other teams, was on time every week for practices and games and i worked my absolute hardest, i was one of the best defencemen on the team, in tough games id step up and id even give small talks before games and than the coaches son got the C and he does nothing to deserve it. The kid was horrible, constantly late and at least one practice a week hed sit out durring the skating.

I know I will get the "C" if I'm not the coach, one of the assistants this year, his son was talking to the coach this year, and said I'd get it. All other players, and other people are like "your captain next year," but I'm like we'll see. But as Kosy said, it looks stupid on the scoresheet but we'll see.

don't worry about what anyone else but your teammates would think. Half the time I was on the top two lines of the team and deservedly so in the amount of points I had. A lot of parents would always try to claim I didn't deserve to be on the team. It was crazy.

I had a kid tell me the only reason I play was cause my dad was the coach. A good friend as well. I felt like shit, and it just made me not want to play, but I realized he was jealous cause he always couldn't make the competitive team, and I could, but still it hurt.

Its a shitty situation. So why would you allow yourself to put the team in that situation?

Anybody who has been around youth hockey knows about all the other stuff that happens to teams, so why would you want to add to that? Just wait a few years until you are completely removed from the situation. Looking back you'll realize that turning down the C or A was the right thing to do.

things people say when they are jealous always seem to hurt more.

when I played junior I was offered the C but I turned it down, I ended up an assistant, youve just got to ask yourself if you can hgandle the responsibilities that come with the C, doesnt matter if your dads the coach or what, its all down to you

Really, what's the big deal with the C? Maybe I just don't get it. Does the captain get paid more? <_< I think it's the recognition some players want.

You'll get more attention from the opponents, cause they figure you must be good. Why not go without the C, avoid the instant scrutiny of your teammates and the other team.

Also, as was already stated, if you are a true team leader then having the letter on your jersey - or lack thereof - won't matter a bit.

If it is his dad giving it to him, it is not honorable. Do the right thing.
