Sounds like your gear doesn't fit properly. Your ribs should be covered by your shoulder pads and a good pair of pants, like tackla 9000s, should come up and cover your lower back and kidneys.

I wear my kideny lacrosse pads under my gear and I have the new Nike Quest pants, but I talk a lot of abuse.

My brother wears his soft rib pads under too.

It's already been stated, but if it's bothering you that bad, then use some lacrosse kidney pads for sure. My friend had some pretty badly bruised kidneys, and he was peeing blood, kidneys are organs that you don't really want to mess around with.
