EPP in pads

Recommended Posts

How well does EPP perform in protective padding?

It seems like some of the lightest protective material out there, so why isn't it used more often? Is it particularly bulky?

it's brittle. it works in helmets because the plastic shell keeps the epp from being deformed, but if it was used in shoulder pads, the padding could potentially snap in half if your shoulder pads were bent the wrong way in your bag. that and it's not particularly soft or comfortable.

is EPP the sometimes whiteish/yellowish(after sweat) stuff in helmets?

sorry for hijacking, but i got a bauer 8000 last year, and it had this nice, soft black padding around the back of head, and some line going up the back of the head. anyone know what this is called/info?

EPP is that black hard foam in your 8000. the nice soft foam is just a low density comfort foam

Have you ever broken or snapped EPP before? I'm tempted to test how exactly how durable it can be, but I'm afraid of having to pay for damaged merchandise if I crack something in a store.

i broke the peice that goes right where your temple is in my bauer 8000. compared to the type of foam you see in shoulder pads/gloves, its much more brittle

So far the only equipment that I can recall having EPP in it (aside from helmets) are Mission Subzero Warp elbow and shin pads and some gloves (Itech, CCM, RBK). I read that the Mission stuff was pretty lightweight, but felt a bit bulky. I'm guessing that they needed extra EPP thickness to keep the stuff strong enough. I can see EPP working alright for shins and elbows since those pads are supposed to be rigid, unlike shoulder pads, but Mission no longer makes pads like that.

It seems like EPP in gloves is restricted mostly to the fingers and backrolls. This makes sense too since those inserts are usually stubby and short, so their size and shape would make them more resistant to breakage. However, I've tried on some of those gloves and they didn't feel particularly lighter than other non-EPP gloves.
