Mission skate fit

Recommended Posts

Hello,

About 2.5 years ago I started skating in a pair of Mission Amp 6. I absolutely loved them, they fit me really well. Afer about 1.5 years the boot broke down, mostly because I left them in my hot trunk all of the time (lesson learned), but I was also skating 3/4 times a week.

I switched over to the Bauer XIV and ever since I have been unhappy. The boot is uncomfortable and I just don't like the pitch or radius of the blade.

So, I would like to go back to Mission and I'd like to know which line will be closest to the old Amp line as far as fit? My initial reading is pushing me toward the "S" line. For the sake of research, lets consider price to not be a consideration. How would the new Fuel AG compare?

I weigh about 150, I'm a fairly nimble forward, intermediate level/mid-level adult leagues.

Thanks for any input.

Tim

I don't recall ever trying on an AMP6 but I thought the AMP line was stiffer and more like the XP series.

Interesting, I never thought of the Amp6 as a stiff skate. The Bauer XIV is much stiffer. It could be because the Amp6 was on the lower end of the Amp series, I think Amp7 was bottom of the line.

So the S series is a softer boot? And where does the L series fit in?

Thanks for the help.

The L series was essentially a Mission Vapor. Not exactly, but similar enough for the purpose of this discussion. The L5 is probably the most like the Vapor that you had, maybe a little better. The S500 is very stiff around your foot but softer up around the ankles, the S400 is a little softer than the 500 in both areas. It allows you to get the support you need without restricting your ability to get maximum forward flex.

Chadd, thanks for your input.

Looks like if I wait a bit, I can get a pair of AG's for a real good price. I saw your post about the wide heel, do you have any other feedback on the AG?

Also, the Amp6 I had was the same size as my street shoe, and they fit perfect. Has Mission changed their sizing since? I have read some things saying you need to size down now.

thanks again

Sizing is pretty similar to Bauer. Whatever size you are wearing in them will most likely be the correct size from Mission.

does that "rule of thumb" go for the newest series of missions (AG's etc.) or for the older ones as well (S-series)? I thought the Mission mantra is go with "shoe size".

Mission has not been "shoe size" for several years, though that was always more than a little misleading as shoe sizes aren't very consistant between brands.

The "similar to Bauer" works for the Fuel as well as S and L, but the fit is very different in all of them.

thanks, Chadd. given the apples and oranges of skates, what would be a better size match in a Mission S-series for my current skate, a 6D Bauer supreme composite (old school--it's actually feels a tad roomy around the toes, and I'd like a snugger fit).

ps where is your LHS located?

Hard to say on the fit, especially since your old ones don't fit correctly. I got one of my guys who was in (very) old supreme 3000s into the L5 last year and they worked pretty well for him. You're really best off trying the new ones first to see how they fit.

I don't manage a shop anymore. Nothing worse than people who don't know what they're doing micromanaging and second-guessing your every action and decision. Even worse when a "pertnership" turns out to be a farce.

Chadd,

may just be me but all the Mission skates i have tried on off the wall for ever have always been way smaller fitting then the Bauers. I can wear a 6.5EE in Bauer but cant get in less then a 7.5EE in mission you sure thats right?

8090s aren't typical of NBH skates. The 8090 is very different from the supremes like the 7000, 8000 or vapors. A 10EE Fuel fits me a little larger than a VaporXX 10EE. Again, this is why people should try things on and not order them online.
