Old Mission Flyweight Shaft compared to L2 ?

Recommended Posts

Is the old green mission flyweight tapered shaft identical to the new Mission L2 ?? If not, how would you rate the old green mission biogirth flyweight tapered shafts and the L2 ?? I am considering purchasing one.

Also was the old mission flyweight shaft 8*5 flex an intermediate shaft ?? Was it shorter than the 10*7 ??

The L-2 is about 3" longer in the butt end though because of its short hosel blades.

Well if you've been around since CB then you should know that it's all personal preference when it comes to "best shaft" comparisons. I can list all the good things that I like about it but someone could say the exact same thing for another shaft. There isn't a standard as to what's good and what's not. If that was the case then no NHLer's would be wearing Bauer 2000s or using wood sticks.

Also how much smaller is the flyweight 8*5 flex shaft in diameter from the senior size 10*7 shaft ??

JR probably knows better than I but I've never noticed a difference in shaft diameter between the the 8-5 and the 10-7/12-9. I have an 8-5 bio and held a 12-9 bio at my LHS and they seem to be the same.

When the Flyweight 8-5 flex first came out, I bought a bunch because it was like a flexier T-flex - it was the same length, same diameter, and fit senior blades. Great shaft for roller, haven't tried it on ice yet, since I have too many sticks and shafts!

the flyweight was also meant to use short hosel blades, so pretty much i think it's the same shaft minus the paint.

You're right, the Flyweight was meant to use short hosel blades but Mission did not think to add length to the shaft to compensate.

Wrong - the Flyweight shaft is 53"

I know for sure I read on here or CB that the Flyweight and T-Flex were the same length. Damn.

Isn't the 8-5 considered an intermediate shaft?

Intermediate flex and length, senior dimensions. The 380 flex Inno tapered Novius shaft is about the same, senior dimensions, senior blade fit, but 45" in length.

are the L2's as light as the flyweights? my friend has 2 of the flyweights and they are the lightest stick i've ever picked up.

I picked up an L-2 with blade at my LHS the other day, and I wasn't impressed. It felt identical to an M-1, which I regard as a pretty average OPS. The balance/weight of the L-2 was nothing like an XN10 or XX.

This makes me think that:

a. The Mission blade is garbage, and the shaft would feel much better with a different blade

or

b. The L-2 isn't the same as the Flyweight

or

c. I'm out of my mind

Keep in mind that I've never held a Flyweight, so take this for what you will.

Going on the fact that you mentioned B I'm going to go with C.

The fact that the stick is now painted makes it heavier. The Flyweight was clear-coated.

As pretty as the L2 is I'm not going to use it. I have a source for a few more Meta 10-7s and I'll most likely get a few more and then clear-coat them again so the damn graphics don't peel off.

The one that I held also had:

1. grip

2. a name printed by Mission on the shaft

3. "95 Flex" printed by Mission on the shaft

I was under the impression that the L-2 didn't come with grip, wouldn't have a name printed on the shaft, and didn't come in 95 flex; but my impressions could be mistaken, of course. There had to be at least eight of them there, and my LHS doesn't usually carry pro returns. Then again, they were all RH, and were the only L-2s in stock. For the life of me I can't remember what the name on the shaft was.

Its more likely that what you say was an M-1 grip painted up as a L-2. A guy I skate with just picked up a Boynton "L-2" that is really just a M-1 grip painted as an L-2.
