They want HOW MUCH?

Recommended Posts

Read the article again. It was just a reference. The are actually asking the Pens to buy out the remaining year of his contract if they want him right now. That should be around 3 Milllion as far as I know. In al honesty I beleive they have the right to ask for a compensation. See...the Russian teams (like most european teams) have their various junior ranks integrated into the pro teams franchises so they basically develope their players by themselves. First off. If there would be no such thing as the IIHF-NHL agreement all the good players would be gone once they are 18 and that would happen every year. They would not get money in return they will have no funding to delevop any more players or high caliber for that matter and would have to play their championship with mediocre players which will result in either poor play or decrease of fan base and theirwith income and sponsorhips. The agreement was a joke anyway because it was based on draft statistics and not on how good a player really is or will become before he reaches the NHL so I understand why the russians did not bother to re-sign the agreement. Now that situation is most common in pro european sports like soccer for example. You want someone on your team who is contracted to another one you either buy the whole contract or a part of the contract and some player in return for example. I mean the NHL or it´s teams have no right to just sign any player they want to because they drafted him just because they are the NHL. If he is contracted to Metallurg and has no "escape" clause to leave for the NHL they will have to put the money on the table or just wait until he is "free" to be signed.

The quote from the article:

When asked how much the Penguins should have to pay for the services of Malkin, Velichkin made a comparison to soccer star Andriy Shevchenko's move from Dynamo Kiev to AC Milan for $25 million.

"Dynamo received millions from Milan for Shevchenko, why can't we get that?, asked Velichkin. "But I can't name the exact price for Malkin. We must wait for Pittsburgh's offer first."

Makes me think they are going to ask for more than just his remaining contract...maybe not 25 Mil...but his club team will be saying "Cha Ching" (however you say that in Russian).

25 mil, haha.

He says he wants to be in the show, so, maybe he can, uh, pull a muscle or something in camp next season if Dynamo won't let him leave and he can just not play for them at all.

Then he could vacation to Pittsburgh, and win a "contest" to practice with the pens for an entire season.

Good deal to me. :)

Yeah the whole "they can't do that just because they're the NHL" argument isn't really that great. They can do that because they are the NHL. And every kid in hockey wants to play there.

Sure they do. But he knew he was going to be drafted and headed the NHL before he signed that contract so go figure. And yes, I agree that you might undestand that quote from the russian executee wrong if you don´t know about european transfer politics and fees. In the end they want the contract to be bought out not more but maybe less. They just try to play their cards....everyone knows Malkin is going to be a Pen next year.

The way I see it if he wants to come here, he can save the Pens alot of money by retiring and then moving. How many times do you see baseball players retire only to resurface in Japan. I don't see why that won't work in this case.

how many years are left in malkins contract

I've read that unless they officially release him or his rights that they retain them forever. It will be interesting to see if Tretiak supports this kind of extortion.

this quote is interesting ...

"I've already made up my mind for next season -- I'll be leaving for the NHL," Malkin told the Sport-Express newspaper. "I'm 100 percent sure of that."

What if he just left? Can russia force him to return? Can Magnitogorsk force him to play?
