Prep Schools

Recommended Posts

whbd18, of that huge list there are maybe 15 good D1 and no D2 prep schools that are great for hockey.  If you are going to spend $130K on a high school for the hockey, it had better be REALLY GOOD with a lot of SCOUTS watching!

If you're going to play hockey for your high school years it won't cost $130k. If they want you to play they won't hesitate to pay.

I pity the fool who thinks all of those preppies are getting a full boat! Almost all give out financial aide based on need, not on athletic scholarship.

But yeah, if one of those schools offers you free tuition and room/board, AND it is a D1 school that wins most of its games, then you would be foolish to not accept! It is the ones paying for a chance to tryout for the varsity team ONCE THEY ARE THERE that make me wonder!

And if you are really smart, you will spend half your time making the connections at these schools to get ahead later in life. Like when the hockey dream is over.

BTW, at all these prep schools all students are required to participate in a sport each season, fall, winter, spring. So you may play hockey in the winter but be prepared to play soccer or something in the fall and play lacrosse or something in the spring.

Find out how many PGs(post graduates) are playing hockey also. They will be minute munchers for the VAR.

I personally think that you get faster hockey and better conditioning/coaching playing juniors, but at least for this past season the scouts do not agree.

I can only speak for Exeter because I went there and was a classmate of the coach, Dana Barbin. (He's four year's older than me, but we both lived in Exeter, so when I was in 8th grade we had the same Latin class, then he PG'ed at the Academy while I was a freshman.)

He was a captain at UNH, then played in Sweden for about six to ten years, before returing to coach at Exeter. That's obviously a decent pedigree. Whenever I'm in NH, I'll work out at the gym, so I'll swing by to chat with him. A couple of years ago, he told me that three or four of his players were drafted that season.

That is not 100% true, My friend went to Bridgton Academy this year, and he did not have to do any other sports, my other buddy went to Hebron Academy and he did have to play all sports, so I think it depends on the school.

Well lets see, some schools offer to pay upwards of $29,000 on AVERAGE, which means that they will offer to pay for alot of your education. So i don't think you'll be playing $130k to play on the hockey team, i don't think many people are paying that much to play on any team. If they want you to play they will give you some money.

Where ever did i say that they would give you a free ride? I said they won't hesitate to pay.

I know one kid who goes to Kent(CT) and he has to play a sport each season. Hockey, Football, and Lacrosse.

Also something I find common is alot of kids go to prep schools thier senior year, which doesnt make much sense at all to me. I would think you would want to go Junior year or post grad if anything.

I wish my parents had the money for me to go to a prep scholl, but since my brother is in college right now, $60K+ per year combined would be a little out of their budget.

Also Biff, I dont think you really know what you are talking about. There are a couple good D2 teams and more than 15 good D1 teams. Also most of those schools are around 28K-30K a year, some less. I know plenty of kids who currently go to prep schools in NE and some that formerly went.

What about Hotckiss?(sp?) I am really looking into that school to go to, for hockey, and acedemics.

Hotchkiss is my #2 for junior year. it's a ridiculous school, visited this year..

Whats #1? When you say ridiculous? What makes it outreal?

St. Paul's is my #1.

What I meant about Hotchkiss was just everything there seems structured. Their facilities are gorgeous, as is the campus/setting of the school, they have a really good leadership program in place, and all kinds of extra opportunities are available. the campus there is honestly outstanding. You don't choose schools just for materialistic things, but the extras they have there pretty much top it off for you. It's just an all-around nice school.

BTW, at all these prep schools all students are required to participate in a sport each season, fall, winter, spring. So you may play hockey in the winter but be prepared to play soccer or something in the fall and play lacrosse or something in the spring.

Untrue. I've visited/talked to many schools, not one has ever instituted this policy. My current school requires 2 sports teams per year. But, the point of this type of rule is simply that they want their elite athletes to be staying in shape. Highly touted prospects will have programs specifically for hockey, and i'm sure if you talk things through with a coach you would be fine. I could very well be wrong, but I have been in contact with roughly 17 schools and have never heard of this.

However, you make a good point about PG's. Lots of schools are turning onto PG players now, so if you are going somewhere make sure that you ask about whats going on as far as rosters go.

I know 3 people who play Varsity for Winchendon in MA. One who is my friend's brother who  got a scholorship to Norwich University for Hockey , for next year.

first he didnt get a scholarship for d3 hockey, so you are lying there.

Also Vermont academy is d1.

argue all you want he didnt get a scholarship, as no one gets athletic scholarships for d3, and if you go here, http://community.middlebury.edu/~dbadger/d3recruits.htm no one from winchendon is on that list for norwich. maybe the coach talked to him once.

o and by the way, winchendon is for troubled kids, you know, bad eggs, so avoid that school

Most guys I know at prep schools in New England have told me they have to play a sport each season. I didn't know some schools don't have that requirement. Just one of the many questions to be asked along the way before finding out the hard way.

How is Avon Old Farms school? Acedemicly and sports wise for hockey and I guess baseball.

Hotchkiss seems like an awsome school. Really nice life you get there. If you go in for your senior year they put you in as a junior, like a redshirting thing almost right?

no heknows what hes talking about, i played prep in d1 2 years ago, you have no idea what you're talking about. THERE IS NOT ONE PREP SCHOOL THAT TAKES SENIORS!!! there are PG only schools, and teams with PGs, but not one school will take a senior, they'll take juniors or PGs.

There are not more than 15 good d1 teams, there are maybe 3 good d2 teams. Prep schools are a dying art. My sr year is when colleges started looking heavily on juniors. I'm happy im playing in college now, but that's cuz i busted my ass my sr year and got looks. And even then imnot d1. For instance, look at every d3 roster (im saying d3 because we all know d1 is mostly juniors), and look at the amount of prep guys versus junior guys. Look at say, the SUNYAC, where there are maybe 10 prep guys in the conference, and it is the 2nd/3rd best conference in d3.

whbd18 if you're going to say something, be right

sherwood21 talks as if he's the next crosby and can run a school single handedly. Most schools, I'd say 95% require 3 sports, whether you are even drafted to the show or not. A sport alternative can be weight lifting, yet it is required.

no, you repeat your junior year and get 2 years there to develop, and establish yourself as a solid investment for the school.

prep is based on need, not ability. Coachs can help you get into the school, they cant finance it for you. Yes, most people can't afford 29k a year, but there were really good players on my team payin 5k because they arent rich, and guys payin 34k because they were, and one of them was a captain

not even close.

it's not a big deal to play 3 sports, whether two of them are weightlifting (two different terms) or not. most athletic kids do anyway, all i'm saying is that you can always talk to schools and see what is actually going on.

Oh, but isn't it better to be playing travel and HS hockey? As travel hockey is more intense, scouts and coaches look at your travel years am I right or no?

the best route would be prep, juniors, and on. If you live in a hs hockey hotbed like MN, forget this, or even in say Boston, but otherwise travel, and regular hs won;t put you onto a college roster

14. i moved in between jv and varsity consistently. would you like me to pull out my stats as well?

i'm not promoting myself at all, in fact i'm trying to do the exact opposite. all i was saying is that every school i have talked to has never, ever told me you need to play 3 sports. i can't really cut it any more clearly than that.

Why would I lie about something like that? I was told he got a scholarship, but not a full scholarship. He was asked to play for Merrimack, but couldnt go there because of his grades and wouldnt get any playing time his first year if he went. Which is why he went to Winchendon post-grad.

And trust me that none of those kids are bad eggs that go to Winchendon. They are only there since they are not that good academicly and needed to get there grades up for college.

well he's lying to you because i guarantee 100% he didnt get even 1$ from norwich that states his scholly is for hockey. It's like the idiots in juniors here, "hey i got a full boat to platty," no you didnt you meathead, there is no such thing as hockey based money in d3

o and winchendon is for troubled kids, i know this as its what their school said
