Recommended Posts

some background. im 28 play in a decent b-level beer league, have been playing for 15 years. ive always had a decent wrister, but in the past few months i cant shoot at all. i havent changed sticks in a while (using a nash response+)...im getting decent chances, but my shot just feels weak. all of a sudden my stick just feels wrong...i dont get it. anyone have any ideas?

How is the rest of your game? Are you still skating as fast as before, or are you noticing that you're getting beat to loose pucks, or caught by d-men? If you're experience more than your usual amount of stress, that could definitely effect how your body feels. It could also lead to lack of sleep, or over-eating (snacking) which obviously effects how your body feels.

If everything is a-ok, then it could just as easily be the blade of your stick, like akhockey suggested, or it could be the shaft getting worn, stressed or fatigued. You say you haven't changed sticks in a while, but I'm not clear on how you mean that...you've been using one actual stick for six months, OR you have six of the same stick and you are rotating a fresh one in every month...

well... my shot is hard (lots of flex) so a wood stick only lasts me about 2 weeks. composite shafts lose their "pop" really fast, so i would just toss it and go with wood.

This may sound stupid but...

take all the tape off your stick (including buttend) and re tape it. i had the same problem and i done this, and it went away. Probably all in the mind, now when your taking a shot your thinking its gonna suck, therefore it will.

hope i helped.

There's sometimes when my shot gets really weak and I notice that my arms feel heavy and slggish. Don't know what causes it, but i feel like crap, i usually go to the YMCA and go play basketball for a few hours and my arms seem to go back to normal, maybe it's a blood flow issue?

Maybe you're getting old? ;)

Hopefully it's because your blade is broken or softened instead.

Did you change position? I'm a lefty and played on my off wing (right D) for a long time. When I switched to playing on the left, I had the same problem of weak shots. It took me a while to realize that when I played on the right I naturally put my weight into my shot beacuse I was leaning towards the goal (i.e. leaning left onto my stick) while skating. When I switched to the left side, I was also leaning toward the goal, but in this case that was toward the right and AWAY from my stick, so I was not putting enough weight into my shots. Once I realized what I was doing wrong, it took me only a couple of games to get my shot back.

i didnt mean ive been using one stick, just the same pattern. ive been using the nash for about a year and a half. used modano before that.

my game hasnt changed much in the past few years. i still skate the same, still forecheck the same, backcheck every so often (it is mens league afterall). perhaps im not counted on to score all the goals as i once may have been, but i dont think that has much to do with it.

ive always played the off wing, so its not that.

maybe i am just getting old. :o

When's the last time you actually just took a bunch of shots and worked on your shooting? With beer league, just showing up for games and playing, you don't really have the puck on your stick very long. Hit up a stick and puck and just fire some biscuits, or get a sheet of plexiglass and dump out 30 pucks in your yard. It's a skill that can diminish if you don't do it very often. A good shooter will be a good shooter with an old wooden stick or the newest Stealth, technology will just improve what's already there.

I'm going through a similar phase, but I'm chalking it up to a 5 year lay off. After about 4 or 5 open hockey sessions I'm beginning to wonder of the "o" word isn't partly to blame.

Maybe the stick just became too whippy for you. Composites sticks/shafts have a tendency to loose their stiffness over a period of time.

Dude ive had the same thing, i find its from burnout, had a long season. I stopped doing hockey for a few weeks cause i had exams, went back cause im on half term and i felt great. For next season i will focus more on building up my arms get a bit more muscle see if that helps towards the latter stages of the season.
