sc37 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2006 A friend who is into dietetics and weightlifting says to get some protein at least an hour after working out. Says it'll maximize the work you did and help with muscle gain. I work out in the morning, come home to eggs, meat, and bread. Just suggest advoiding sugar and too much acidic stuff like orange juice in large amounts.
pantherfan 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2006 I heard you should have lots of Carbs like pasta or Potatoes, spose you could mix it up with a bit of protien aswell eg. Tuna pasta
BGM 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2006 If you search there is info all over the internet and in magazines on what to eat but yes protein and carbs are what you need.
CaptainFalcon15 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2006 I have a protein shake right after my workouts and wait awhile, say about an hour, and then have some cheese or yogurt or chicken---anything filled with protein Carbs are essential after workouts, but since my protein shake (gatorade and whey protein) has carbs in it, im usually fine
lee92 2 Report post Posted June 4, 2006 you need to have something within an hour after the workout to get the most out of it. generally, have a protein shake. carbs aren't what you want, because carbs don't build muscle...protein builds muscle. so either a shake, peanut butter, chicken, or something along those lines. icefish 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2006 lee92 is right. You'll need to eat your biggest meal within an hour, but a high carb energy drink right after the workout is good to have in addition.
biff44 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2006 Assuming you are trying to gain muscle mass: You need to get something into your body AS SOON as you put down the last weight! 15 minutes should be the max between working out downing some grub. At the least, a big glass of lowfat chocolate milk. I find that "Beer Nuts" are great too, because they have a nice mix of quick carbs, slow carbs, and protein. The best would be some sort of energy shake with protein, carbs, and fruit in it. And NOT just a gatoraid (has no protein and way too much pure sugar). SB39 2 Report post Posted June 5, 2006 Right after you workout, you want protein and carbohydrates, and you are welcome to have them be high GI carbs. An hour after that, you want to have a normal, medium to large meal; the first is simply for recovery and to start the muscle recovery (read BUILD) process, then the next is where you you keep that high metabolism going and get more nutrients. CaptainFalcon15 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2006 The carbs/cals arent for gaining muscle, just to replenish what u lost in the workout
lostprophetRJX 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2006 blend low fat ice cream, low fat milk, frozen strawberries or raspberries, a banana, egg whites, and ice cubes. i blend this with Weight Gainer 2200 from GNC. its a great way to get in more carbs for people trying to gain weight but have trouble eating a lot. dont buy protein powder, it doesnt do anything. your body can only take in and use so much protein to repair the muscles, and it gets more than enough from the natural foods you eat. extra protein is either stored as fat or excreted. your diet should be about 65% carbs, 15-20% protein, and 15-20% fat. sonsplayhockey 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2006 I've researched this alot. Both talking to people and reading on the internet. Mostly cause I'm older and get so dam worn out the next day.Easily digestible carbs and protien. Your body needs that to quickly recover from the work out. It is supposed to aide in muscle recovery and rebuilding. If you don't do that, then the next workout you do may be on muscles that have not recovered fully and working on muscles that have not recovered fully does not build you up as fast. Professionals do the protien shakes mixed by the team trainers or something. They digest quickly and get into your system fast. I used to drink beer after a game, go home and sleep. I felt so bad for the next 2-4 days. Now, I get quick carbs, amino acid pills and maybe a ham sandwich then stretch. Now I'm only sore for 1-2 days :) ok, so maybe I'm still drinking the 1-2 beers after the game but the carbs, protien and streching help. I've been told I should also go through a cool down phase but I don't seem to have the time to do that. Certain amino acids and other stuff is also useful I read to aide during the workout. Some people take stuff before the games or workouts. Personally, if I don't take my amino acids, eat complex cards during the day, B-12 and Vitamin C before a game, I probably have half the energy then when I do all this crap. If someone could just bust through all this stuff and educate people it would make everyone's lives more simple. Its just hard for people to put facts out that they can stand by.
