HockeyIsLife 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2006 Ok I made a topic about trying to get to the nhl. I am 15 and and just finished my last year of bantam. I am going to play house for 2 years and then play junior A OR B for 1 and try to get a ncaa scholorship. Is this possible to do or is there any other route.O and another thing. At the end of the season I was so pumped for midget but now I am not sure If even want to play hockey. I'm thinking I am just like this because I havent played in a while. Do you guys have anything I can do to get me in the mood. Or something I can read thats inspirational?Anything except watching playoffs I've been doing alot of that. :D Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

If you're good enough, maybe you could try out for a Junior A or Junior B team.. but you have to be 16 or 17.. akhockey 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2006 im 18 now but when i was 15 i was in the same spot. I played Jr. B this last year and im playing Jr. A next year. Just working really hard in the off-season and try to improve. When you turn 16, depending where you live, go to some Junior tryouts if there are any in your area and see where you stand. And things happen at a pretty young age, so if you blink--you've missed it!What general area of the country do you live in?What year in high school coming up?Roughly how are your grades in school?Do you mind moving away from home next year? The year after?Can you afford to pay the ~ $6,000 to 10,000 to play Junior hockey?Would you rather 1) have a college degree and a "chance" to make it to the NHL, or 2) make it to the NHL, and have a chance to get a college degree along the way?What are your size, weight, are you still growing, stats for last season?Have you ever had a "scout" talk to you and say something good about your game?There are many paths to the NHL, and each player has to find the one that is HIS path, be willing to modify the plan to get there, and work like heck. Don't try anything you've never done before cos likely chances are that you'll screw up. Also, be a hitter. Try and give clean hits and use your body. Take a hit, get up and give hits. BK 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2006 The biggest issue I see is talent.Talent is not how good you are but the capacity you have to learn something. Example: We have a 14 year old kid who plays drop in every week. Less than a year ago, he put on his first pair of iceskates. Right now, less than a year later, he is bar-non the fastest skater on the ice in drop-in, has a mean slapshot and can put it in any corner on demand from the blue line with his wrister. He is better than a lot of the guys who have been playing since they were in diapers.You have to have a LOT of talent if you want to make it anywhere, muchless the nhl. sonsplayhockey 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2006 Odds are pretty low to get into the NHL. Not that it's impossible. There are just so many competing for it. Make sure you have a backup plan for your life. With the available spots to new players in the NHL and the fact that you have people competing for them all over the world, its going to be tough. Both my kids started at age 3. People say "hey, just like Gretzky. Is he going to play in the NHL?". I tell them I"m just trying to keep them out of trouble and in sports and hope maybe one day when I'm in my late 40's I can get them to play in a Beer league team with me :)I"m spending right now almost $2K a year on each one of the boys with league fees, equipment clinics etc. At least I get to share the ice with them.Oh, Watch Rudy and Gattaca over and over.Good luck.
