Vancouver Canucks Original Logo

Is the old canucks logo supposed to resemble the letter "C" or is it just a stick in a rink?

Yep, but it still relates to the area beacuse of the whales in that area.

Agreed but totally unrelated to the team. That would be like the Bruins putting a lobster on their jersey.

Well, just what WOULD a canuck on a jersey look like??

The orca has specific and significant resonance in Vancouver. It is an attempt to connect locally.

I guess if they were trying to connect locally it was either a killer whale or a pot leaf. I think it looks like ass, it scares me that they thought it was the best option.

Well Chadd, moving aside the final jersey design...if that is what you think looks like an ass?

And simply dealing with the imagery for a moment.

Obviously a Bruin is not going to use a lobster anymore than a Canuck would use bear imagery.

So what image or symbol would YOU have them use?

I have no issue with the killer whale. From what I read at the time it was intended to reflect the new ownership more than represent local symbology. It may not be accurate but those were the things that I read at the time. As for what I would use, I honestly don't know. It's a difficult moniker to represent visually. Just for fun, I'll whip out some old Johnny Canuck-type visuals.

Seriously tho, a whale representing the slang term for Canadian? It's just dumb. At least the Yankees have that goofy 'Uncle Sam' hat on the end of the bat. I guess we don't have any decent icons in Canada if that's the best they could come up with. After the maple leaf was taken they just threw up their hands on the west coast. They should just give up for good and go back to the orange and gold star-wars-flying-skate! Wasn't she a beaut!

I like the Johnny Canuck stuff!! LOL Of course, they'd have some copyright issues with it.

You can see their problem? A visual is tough because there is nothing to play off of "Canuck" so they are left with Vancouver...and they've already had that nasty V jersey.

So you search for symbols that resonate with the market ... something that will also sell merchandise - which is NOT a small consideration these days. Merchandizing is such an important revenue generator.

Althougth the new ownership created the need to find a "new look" so we'd all be clear there was a "new sherrif in town" - the symbols they selected would have to resonate with the city. Vancouver is surrounded by mountains and the waterfront - so there is the natural places to play. Whales have always been an important icon; especially orcas. The Seaquarium had some - can't believe I've forgotten the names. It was a huge deal when they had to remove them. So orcas have a special place in Vancouverites' hearts. It is imagery that works in Vancouver - who cares if they don't get it in Florida or Ohio?

I realize that this is speculation on my part - the jersey I was involved with was the gorgeous flying skate - and I was long gone by the time they turned to orcas. But I'm well aware of the importance and difficulty of selecting symbols and imagery for this team.

Sigh...having settled on the orca I just wish they had ended up with a better design. Even better, bring back the flying skate. Now THAT was a jersey!

The Orca in the current canucks logo is because as someone said earlier of the company that owns the canucks (Orca Bay). As a Vancouverite, my opinion is that they just lucked out that the Killer Whale has ties with local aboriginal culture.

If the Canucks were in Saskatchewan i wouldn't be surprised if they used the same logo.

I actually liked the hockey skate jersey but honestly if we stuck with the original logo i'd be super happy. there are WAY too many teams in the NHL right now that use the black jersey.

Thanks for pointing out the local NW Indian influence in the whale design. I was waiting for someone to mention that local reference. It is only the most obvious tie-in to BC that they used in the design!

I can understand why they have problems, but it doesn't change my opinion. I liked the old flying skate one a lot more than the new ones. Even the old original ones are better than the current ones.

Bottom line. Since 1970 the Canucks have significantly changed their jerseys, colours & logo 4 times! None of which have been even close to looking good. When I think Canucks, I think Cooperalls! Pick something that will stand the test of time and go with it. Nothing worse than teams changing their entire identity.

a beer drinking lumberjack? :D

He may look something like this: http://www.canucks.homestead.com/canuckshistory.html

The top logo is the Johnny Canuck logo from the Canucks's time in the Western Hockey League. (For you younger members, that would be the professional WHL that closed up shop in 1974, not the current Major Junior league)
