Rolling Stone's Top 100 Artists

Recommended Posts

Okay, here's a twist on the Favorite Songs threads.

Since they can jump around genres quite a bit, we'll limit the song choices to a particular artist, using Rolling Stone magazine's Top 100 Artists of the Past 50 Years. Every Saturday night, when I get back from the pickup I play, I'll create a new thread with the next band on the list. After that, we'll create threads for the most egregious omissions -- HOW THE HELL IS PINK FLOYD NOT AMONG THE TOP 100??? Anyway, this should keep us entertained for the next two years..... :P

Also, to help you think ahead, here are the Top 10 artists:

1. The Beatles

2.Bob Dylan

3.Elvis Presley

4. The Rolling Stones

5.Chuck Berry

6. Jimi Hendrix

7. James Brown

8. Little Richard

9. Aretha Franklin

10. Ray Charles

You can post reasons for your favorite three songs or just list them. I'll list mine in the next post.

Tomorrow Never Knows (funky and experimental guitars/sounds)

I'm Only Sleeping (something about its slower pace I love -- almost like it's missing a beat)

I Want You (more of true rock song)

Stairway to Heaven-Led Zeppelin.....the live version is incredible

Achilles Last Stand-Led Zeppelin......10.5minutes of absolute madness

Free Bird-Lynard Skynard.....Crazy use of guitar(s)

No, no, no....this thread is only for Beatles songs. When their slots come up, we'll list the Zeppelin and Skynyrd songs.

Because as big as Led Zeppelin was in the 70's, their cultural impact was NOTHING compared to the Beatles. Led Zeppelin was a band, whereas the Beatles were a social phenomenon.

I'd like to keep each threead limited to that band, so do you guys want to start another thread to discuss the Top 100? By the way, Mack, Eleanor Rigby I know, the other two I don't. Those are Beatles' songs?

Hey Jude

When I'm 64

Lady Madonna

My avatar is rather suiting...

Where are the Eagles???

I read somewhere that they sold close to or more albums than the Beatles. Might not be true, but I'm sure the Rolling stone bases a lot of the ranking on Album sales. That could be another reason why the Floyd isn't on.

I don't know.. just an idea.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Happiness Is A Warm Gun

Strawberry Fields Forever (Would have been I'm Only Sleeping but already said so I changed it up to get as many song opinions as possible)

And as a fourth it would have been Sgt Peppers complete album, just couldnt pick one song, the album flows together too well and feels like one long song.

Very tough to only pick 3, they have so many songs that I love and these are 3 that Ive heard most recently which I also love. Cant wait for some of my other favourite bands to come up.

Something

The End - Ringo's only drum solo: And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make,Ahhhhh

But I don't have a song written by Paul...

Oh, only Beatles songs? Yeah, going with Eleanor Rigby, Paperback Writer and Eight Days a Week.

That's interesting, given I don't think any are later than 1965. A lot of people don't give their older credence as much credit, because of Sgt. Peppers but, from what I've read, even the early stuff was groundbreaking.

Thats because their older stuff was a lot more poppy and love songish because they weren't on the drugs yet. The later stuff was groundbreaking because of the drugs I think and just the style of music was a lot more revelutionary unlike the poopy stuff which was already around in Britain at the time. It was also groundbreaking however because it was much better then the stuff already out and really brough the masses in who stuck and grew with them throughout their career as a band. I prefer the older stuff such which is a lot more stoneresque. And Eleanor Rigby was relased on Revolver in 66 while Paperback Writer was released on Hey Jude in 70.

Paperback Writer was released as a single earlier. As a matter of fact, on the Anthology DVD, they said that one of the Beatles songs could be considered the first music video, and I think it was Paperback Writer.

I understand what you mean about the different styles of music in pre and post Sgt Peppers (maybe Revolver/Rubber Soul), but the masses were already there. That's what the movie A Hard Days Night was all about -- showing the craziness of their lives. This was also on the DVD, but one of the reasons they stopped touring was the crowds were so loud that the band couldn't hear themselves; Lennon had said they could play the wrong notes yet the crowd wouldn't notice.

Paperback Writer was recorded in 66 and released in that year as a single, first year it came out on album was 70. It was the start of their change to new music as it was their first single which was not a love song.

And sorry for responding to all these with the exact facts but Im just dead bored at work and have been Wikipediaing all these songs and reading their historys, anything interesting to get through the day, Ive moved on to Wikipedia after clearing YouTube out of all that I deem interesting.

its very hard to pic out three songs, because there are so much great beatles songs, especially a lot of great songs with a lot of great memories, so i will pic the 3 songs which remember me to some special moments the most:

1. In My Live

2. And I Love her

3. Hey Jude

so, maybe not the best songs but for me the songs with the most memories...

Those two Led Zeppelin songs are my two favorite songs...I know that this is just for the Beatles, but I have to agree with Thockey on those. The live version off of how the west was won is soooo damn good. Achilles last stand is just amazing as well.

I can never claim a liking to "Hey Jude" because I'm pretty sure that was the soundtrack to my conception and I almost got named that.
