Shock Doctor Gravity Mouthguard

Recommended Posts

After trying but getting fed up with those crappy boil-and-bite mouthguards, I started looking at alternatives. I found this one on ePuck: http://www.epuck.com/webapp/wcs/stores/ser...ategory_rn=null

It fits on the lower set of teeth and is designed to help prevent concussions (I wear a shield so it's not for keeping my teeth intact).

Anyone ever use or see this? I'm wondering about the fit.

should be in Ice Hockey Equipment Forums, oh well

Is this a new mouthguard? I used the RBK SmartMouth Pro and that thing is money. It's much better than anything I've ever used and the best part of it all is that it's low bulk and you can breathe & speak properly as well as pronounce your S's properly, and you Boil & Bite and Custom Gel fit it for maximum fit.

On the other hand, if you want the most genuine platinum mouthguard

go see your dentist

My wife's dad is a dentist.. I got a couple free custom mouthguards. I have used "boil and use" guards and they are no contest for the customs.

yes, I know all about the custom ones from the Dentist as I used to have one (a long time ago...)

I've also read a ton about the gel ones etc. - yes, they sound OK.

I know there's a few custom places out there which you can make your own molds and get the guard shipped to you.

I know the boil-and-bite ones are CRAP as I've used them before.

The question was if anyone has used the Shock Doctor Gravity guard which sits on the lower teeth, rather than having to form to the upper teeth?

Makes a lot of sense to me.

Dont mess with gimics when it comes to safety equipment. Stick with what you know.

and why is it a gimmick? Just because it's new and hasn't been seen before?

That's almost like saying those new-fangled airbag things in cars are gimmick's? Or thost fancy-schmancy com-po-sit blades are gimmick's?

My friend uses this but for competitive skiing. He says his whole team wears that specific model. (or whatever other shockdoctor lower teeth mouthguards there are) If you go on the SD site, I think the gravity one is under motosports.

I have a custom one I use that is of professional grade (used by NHL players).

It fits really well and I can talk fine with it. My kids use them too and its the only way I can get them to keep it in all the time.

I have one of the green and black shock DR mouthguards as a backup (boil and bite). Only had to use it once and it annoyed me.

An NHL Team dentist I know (my wife is also a dentist) said the Green Shock Dr is about the closest you'll get to a custom one. (not sure how many he really looks at).

Things he said is that

1) Mouthguard is mostly to protect you from concussion, not from a puck taking out your teeth.

2) If the mouthguard falls out when you get hit and you don't have it in your mouth when you hit your head on the ice for a secondary hit, it's not gonna do you any good.

I actually own this one too and its WAY too bulky. I look like a boxer and this isnt comfortable while playing hockey.

When i watch pro hockey, the players got tiny, tight mouthguards. Of course, they are custom, but which retail mouthguard is as tight/small as those and yet kinda safe.

I dont want to go the custom route at first.

Thanks.

... I don't wear a mouthguard, so I don't really care about all of this one way or another, but to play Devil's advocate, I must point out that a lot of people have been killed and badly injured by car airbags, and as a result, their usefulness as a safety device is highly debatable. Furthermore: Do you consider a composite stick blade a piece of safety equipment?

Once you start to go with the higher up SD's they get VERY Bulky. I have the gel fit one or whatever that I dont even use now because it fills up my whole damn mouth.

You can use a regular boil and bite one the same way. Just turn it over and trim it shorter for your lower teeth. VIOLA!!! You have a new design lower jaw mouth guard. My son uses this and loves it. He can speak and breath much easier and he does not have to worry at all about gravity pulling on it.

I just cant describe what i dont like. When you look at a pro, you dont see him wearing a mouthguard. When i put it in my mouth, my mouth is full and i look like a boxer, my lips are kinda pushed out and i just dont want that.

I want a small one which covers the teeth, not my whole head ;)

bulky? Hardly, compared to the shock doctor ones that aren't $2.99

Did you trim to make it fit better or did you just get the wrong size?

go to the dentist, custom should be the way to go...

I got mine made at the dentist, and he even got a transparent piece in it that has my name and mobile number... told him that it was the last thing I hope people call me about. Not the best way to pick up chicks either.... 'hey sweetie, here my number, its right next to the left upper insisor'

you can custom them to colors as well....

No, i got me the adult one which is my size. I COULD take a pic, but that looks too damn stupid ^_^

Im sure, going the custom way will be the best decision, but that wont be cheap and i hope to get me a retail one which does the job as well.

What did you do to your RBK mouthguard? I did not trim it, dont think its needed.

Edit: Actually, i dont care if a better one is from ShockDoc or some other brand. I just posted here cause you mentioned the RBK one.

i tried the gravity one before i got a custom one from opro.com.

The gravity guard made me gag if i had it in longer than 30 seconds. It just didn't work for me.

I think i paid $60 for my opro and i am happy with it. Once it's in it stays on your teeth really well. It just sounds like i have a lisp when i talk with it.

The gravity is just another version of the boil and bite.

Can you provide pics? The mouthguard itself and maybe one when its in the mouth?
