Pitch 3 and blade Radius/Profile/Rocker

Recommended Posts

I am skating on Mission L7 and I have experimented with both pitch N and +1. I know that +1 puts you more on the balls of your feet, which is more of a proper skating position.

My question is, would it be beneficial to profile the skate to a forward profile to match? I am not overly worried about Radius, but the pitch of the steel.

i have heard of other guys using the pitch to move forward as well as taking some steel off of the front of the blade. the pitch is a good idea as many guys/KIDS need some sort of adjustment that is not attainable otherwise ( unless you spend $$$ to grind them and even then you are stuck with it until you get new steel ). it let's you experiment without consequence. the pitch is a great start. if you need more then you can have a shop do the rest.

The whole point of the Pitch holder is so that you can change your balance point without having to reprofile the steel. I suppose if you wanted a forward or backwards pitch beyond what the holder will get you, you could have the steel profiled by a shop.

And as for being "stuck" with a profile until you get new steel (not true), just have the steel reprofiled again. Some methods of profiling remove only a small amount of material compared to others.

you certainly could reprofile- at what cost? the more you toy with heat you run into strength issues as well as cutting more steel away. that was the point. sure you can reprofile- but use some common sense man! how many times are you going to do this??? i love you guys that get hung up on technicalities. sure you can reprofile, but you will have to pay someone to do it again..... when with the Mission you can just drop the hardware and reposition. franks and beans maaaan.

" SCOTT???!!!! youuuuuu just don't get it......do you??? "

OTG- what is your current line of work? just curious....

all the mfgs skates are different to some degree no doubt. superfeet makes great stuff. i cannot tell you how many times i have tried a new brand of skates and to my dismay the arches were almost flat- superfeet to the rescue.

I am skating on 288mm steel reprofiled to 9'. The original sharpening left a sharp point on the skates that was playing havoc with my skating. I am thinking of going back to an 11' before the next season starts.

I don't feel that I'm "hung up on technicalities". All I'm saying is that since I don't have Pitch holders, I have to pay $25 to get my skates profiled (which I did), and if I end up not liking it, paying another $25 to get the blades redone (which I'm thinking about). Buying new blades is another $45, and I would still have to pay $25 for the profile. In fact, I wish I had Pitch holders myself so I wouldn't have to go through all the extra trouble to try a new profile to see if it suits me.

The Pitch holders give you basically two "profiles" to try, neutral or their plus 1. And just the stock radius . After you try those, you can certainly try something different by getting a custom radius. Some shops do not charge for radius adjustments, ... ask them what the charges are if you don't like the profile.

What about the heat and strength issues that rugdnit brought up? Are they of real concern? ie. do I need to get new steel?

Not if the person doing the profile didnt press to hard on the steel and overheat it.

If that has happened it might not be a bad idea.

Yup, usually the evidence is left on the steel nice bronze/blue burn marks. Ouch.
