Ice skate chassis/holders

Recommended Posts

Until now, I never thought about skate chassis/holders, but the more I read I'm learning that for some they make a big difference and like everything else, some people have very strong opinions about them.

Are there any general facts about the different holders that are commonly accepted? (i.e. It's common knowledge that CCM skates fit a bit wider etc.)

I'm curious if Pro Lite 3's are better for certain people or skating styles vs. Tuuk vs Razor Blades vs eBlades, etc.

I'm aware of T-Blades, but that's a combination of a holder and a very unique blade. I'm most interested in learning about the different holders. For example, is one kind better for heavy set players, and others are better for those who make a lot of tight turns?

I posted this on the CCM forum and people started talking about blade depth of hollow and radius. I know about that, I'm stumped about the part that holdes the blade to the boot. Is there really a difference??

In very general terms, the heavier you are, the more likely you are to prefer a stiffer holder. The ICM is probably the stiffest then the Pitch and Tuuk Custom+.

The main differences you'll find between holders are the pitch they are at and the materials used (some are stiffer than others). Any blade can be altered to suit any skating style.

Looking at the NHL Gallery shots I noticed Iggy and Dave Andreychuk both had Pro Lite 3's on their Vector skates, but that's not how they come off the shelf.

Too bad I don't have enough money to experiment with various boot and holder combinations, but at my level, I guess I wouldn't notice much of a difference, if any. :)
