Fire0nIce228 1 Report post Posted August 24, 2006 Okay I leave for school on saturday and I've tried calling my roommate, left a message, found him on facebook and left and message and he hasn't responded to any of my messages. What the hell should I do? I dont know if I need to bring my TV, refridgerator, telephone, etc. cause I can't friggen talk to him about what he is/isn't bringing. I hate to bring it up, but he's a different race and background completely from me, and I reall hope that has nothing to do with it..any suggestions?
Eazy_b97 1 Report post Posted August 24, 2006 Could just be on Vacation. I'd bring a TV and a phone, but leave the fridge at home, you can usually pick those up there (at least around here).

Fire0nIce228 1 Report post Posted August 24, 2006 I know a kid who moved into a brand new one at California university of Pa, it was very very nice.. had a kitchen and living room in the middle the kitchen had a little bar area with some stools, and then 2 bedrooms on either end, with a full bathroom at each end as well, plus a countertop with a sink outside the bedroom doors so that if one is using the shower, the other still has a sink and mirror..it was super nice I'd love to live in one like that. Vapor 0 Report post Posted August 24, 2006 Get an apartment in the area if the dorm life isnt for you. Schools make a lot of their money through dorming and housing. You can probably save money by finding a place by the dorms. Of course this matters on where you are, what kind of transportation you will be using, etc. But in New York public transportation is the way to go, and a good majority of students at my college have apartments vs. the horrible dorming conditions. mack 44 Report post Posted August 24, 2006 ...or he may have to rot for one year in their housing, like many schools make kids do.
Vapor 0 Report post Posted August 24, 2006 My school has 3 dorming buildings, one is located on 92 and Lex in an old YMCA, one is located in the world famous New Yorker Building (34 and 8) and one is located in the Clark building in Brooklyn. All of them are old hotels. The setup is very poor. You pretty much life your life in a tiny hotel room with a roomate and barely have room to move. They are paying upwords of 1500 dollars a month too. I pay about 1200 a month for a place on the upper east side and I ahve about 1000 sq fee + 300 sq feet of ourdoor space. It just dosent make sense to me. You have so much more freedom, and much better conditions.
mack 44 Report post Posted August 24, 2006 I'm with you, I hated the dorms but for some students it's part of their scholarship or maybe it's just cheaper at that certain school.$1200/month? Are you having to share that with 3 other people or what?
Project824 0 Report post Posted August 24, 2006 I'm with you, I hated the dorms but for some students it's part of their scholarship or maybe it's just cheaper at that certain school.$1200/month? Are you having to share that with 3 other people or what? Some schools it's the best situation if you're a freshman or new transfer and don't know anyone else at that school. You'll meet other freshmen quickly and early. Although there's distractions everywhere, temptation tends to run a bit higher when you live off campus, and your best chances of making it to class in the morning are if you live on campus.$1200 for 1000 sq. feet sounds pretty on target for that neighborhood. Actually kind of surprised it's not more.
Fire0nIce228 1 Report post Posted August 24, 2006 I'm a new transfer student so I kinda wanted to live in the dorms my first year (my schools dorm buildings arn't horrible) so I could meet some friends and I also think I'll suceed a little better in the classroom, however I wasn't planning on my roommate being a prick. mack 44 Report post Posted August 24, 2006 I hope this is the worst thing he does because I remember my roommate being a pachouli-smelling hippie that never really drank, then turned into an alkie before the fall semester ended. Nothing like coming home in the morning to a huge steaming pile of vomitus in the middle of the room.
kosydar 0 Report post Posted August 24, 2006 I don't know where you're going to school but at Oregon there is no way in hell living in the dorms is cheaper. My buddy and I were originally in a standard room which we were paying $8000 a year for (included food). It was tiny, all our hallmates sucked, and basically it was going to suck for the year. I think a big part of Freshman year should be suffering in the dorms, but above all you should be happy. We were fortunate to be moved into one of the 40 suites the school offered. It was 3 blocks off campus and $3000 a year more, but it was definitely worth it. It was 3-4x the size of a standard dorm room, complete with toilet, shower and sink. Hell we even had a cleaning lady who unnecessarily came once a week. It was big enough that we were able to let our friend move in with us for a month and not feel cramped at all.So what I'm saying is that if you move in and you are really unhappy for one reason or another, don't feel like you are stuck and have no options. You are paying a good amount of money to the school and you have the right to be happy with your situation. I will say that living in the dorms is the best option for a Freshman though. Compared to my friends who lived off campus, I really feel like I got much more of the college life. I met tons of people who I normally wouldn't have ever met (5 of the other 6 guys living with me next year are all from my dorm). Living in the dorms is also a good transition. You don't have to worry about bills and all that shit, which I'm finding out this year can be a real bitch.
