NYFD 9/11 Remembrance Tournament

Recommended Posts

The NYFD is having a 9/11 Remembrance Tournament at the Ice House this week-end. Games started at 8:30 AM this morning and the skate sharpening was non-stop! We have three rinks going with games. There are 30 teams in from as far west as Phoenix, from Atlanta, and Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The NYFD has about 10 teams entered from different fire houses around all 5 boroughs. There were 2 Prevost buses outside the rink from Ontario, as well. Toronto FD has a team here. That bus ride must have been a blast because the first thing they were looking for was more ice for the beers in the cooler!

Good on the NYFD - what a great idea!

So, DS50... sounds like you got run off your feet; anything left? or are you reduced to a mere nub of humanity at this point!?!

The line I heard tonight about the #1 Fire and Ice team for NYFD: "Oh yeah, they can skate and they can drink. They got some oilers, too!"

those guys are all in good shape on that squad..they are deep as well...used to roll 4 lines on pro style shifts in some scrimmages...an eyeopener when 13 is a lot for your own crew..glad to see the support is still strong..

Peter....any of the older guys there from the Monday Morning Skate or is it strictly competitive?

They are running three divisions: A, B, and C. I would say most of today's guys were definitely "players." Jim, the senior members of the Monday Morning S-O-R group(another 25+ years bunch) would be in for a long skate.

We all know how tight we are as hockey players, so just add the firemen's bond to the mix and know that these are all very special guys. Kudos to NYFD for putting it together.

I don't know where exactly either team was from. I was so busy in the shop I did not get to see as much of the games as I had hoped. Team New Hampshire(on their jersey) made it to the finals in the A divsion against NYFD. The A division had some speed, for sure. Toronto sent down 2 teams and Ottawa had a team as well. I'll say one thing: they grow some big goalies up north! One of the shop guys said the goalie wasn't that big while we watched a bit through the shop window out through the lobby into Rink 2. I told him, "hey, the goalie is doing a butterfly right now. Wait until he stands up."

LOL....

Similar story. This summer during our Beer League, opposing goalie comes on to the ice for warm-ups late, sporting brand new oversized custom Eagles. Pure white; never seen a puck. Chirping starts immediately from both teams.

Half way through the 1st, someone on our bench yells out to the ref at the near blue line:

"Hey, ref ...Aren't you going to measure those things?"

He turned to our bench and with a smile said:

"No, but I do feel like I should skate over and see if I can get a beer out of one of them" Bench busted a gut laughing.
