Anyone use playitagain sports to sell their gear?

Recommended Posts

I brought in two excellent condition senior skates to playitagain sports on sunday hoping to get maybe half of what they are new for them. I figure they had tons of used gear and might try to buy them from me for 40-50% of what they are new, and then sell them for a few bucks more.

I was wrong. For great and near perfect condition Nike Flexlite10 skates and Mission S400, senior skates, I was offered $62.50! That's for both pairs of skates, with original boxes!

Someone else told me that it's just how business is and to go ahead and sell them myself unless I want to practically give them away so playitagain can make a bigger buck selling my gear.

sheesh whats someone going to do with $62.50..

playitagain is known to do this. they offer terrible deals because they have to double the price to make a profit. its different than selling to a single consumer. the price you sell them to play it again becomes their cost price. its only worth it if you are purchasing something from the shop, and trade in equipment for discount.

I manage a play it again. i just want to state we do not try to rip off the customer. but we are also in business it is are practice sell product for half of what it go's for new and the give you a percentage of that. but lets be realistic if you went to a store you would not buy a pair of skates for few dollars less then what they go for new. we do not double are profit

In their defence, the local PIAS here does offer low amounts for gear but their used items generally aren't priced high. Their prices on new gear is an entirely different story though.

I've found that over the years PIAS has veered dramatically from being a recycled sporting goods store to being just another retail sports store. As such, they really do not want to take used equipment, hence they lowball to customers wanting to sell used equipment, so as to discourage them, cough, cough, .. saving space for their "new" equipment. Don't believe me, just go into a PIAS and see how much floor space they have for "used" stuff.

Granted, nothing wrong with selling new stuff, but be honest, they are no longer a recyle store. Once we agree on that, we can all sing kumbya together. ;)

Did I mention that $62.50 was store credit? If I wanted that in cash, it would have been less.

Seriously though, at 30 bucks for a pair of skates, you'd expect that I walked in with heavily abused stuff. The guy did a pretty long inspection of each skate.

The only problem with ebay is that it's tough to find the right buyer at the right time. And I've got alot of posts before I can sell on this forum.

So yeah, that's what I get for buying skates online and having them not fit right!

Funny, just returned from the bathroom and right there next to the crapper was this month's USA Hockey magazine with a FULL page add from PIAS. Right at the top of their list was a bullet.... "Large selection of new 2006 products" and ..."trade in your current equipment and save BIG on your new gear". But what made me laugh was, "Trained Hockey Professionals fit you right.". Our nearby PIAS went out of business. The guy who owned it was a golfer, and only teens worked there.

certain things on ebay just dont sell. i'll give it a try and put it up, but i know that if you dont get the right buyer on ebay, it wont sell for anything. especially with used skates where people need the right size!

Sounds very familiar, I had a high school kid explain to me how I NEEDED a $275 Easton Stealth to have a better shot in a beer league opposed to the Bauer shaft and blade I was looking at that was about a third of the price.................................... This PIA had a satellite store at the one arena in town, it closed a couple of months ago and now the space is like a beauty salon.....................

Understand that PIAS is a franchise. Just because some of them are not knowledgeable about hockey doesn't mean that ALL are. Whatever way these franchisees decide to run their business is their business, but don't label all of them as being one and the same.

What size are the skates?

7.5D Flexlite 10 and 7.0D S400

the missions are way too narrow and hurt my feet, and then the flexlites were way too big and i had too much room.

so i use my 1998 Bauer supreme 3000's even though they weigh like 10lbs each.

i guess that's why they say you really need to try on skates at a LHS but i still dont think you'll know how you fit a skate until you actually SKATE in them.

We understand PIAS is a franchise, but when you take out a full page ad in the leading hockey mag in the country, that's a pretty bold statement. I compare it to a McDonalds ad, when they say something, every Mc Donalds should be exactly the same. And they pretty much are. MC D's I guess is more strict about franchise consistency than PIAS. Anyway, my concern with PIAS's in general is that you can't be everything to everybody. As most who work in hockey shops know, it's a full time job just staying abreast of hockey equipment, nevermind soccer, skateboarding, football and golf. It is impossible for an employee at a PIAS to be a expert in all the sports. Having said that, we do have an excellent PIAS in our area that is pretty good about hockey. The owners son is a hockey player. Too many PIAS though have zero staff with hockey knowledge.
