Skate suggestion for a defensive player

Recommended Posts

I am in the market for a new skate. I have been using various skates over the past years. Recent skates have been a Vapour 10, Vapour XX, and 2 pairs of 7000s.

I skate 4-5 times a week as a defensement. I am 6'2", 225. I am looking for something that is a stiff boot and is wide (I wear a 10.5 E). Right now, I am open to any skate, but some skates that are on the short list:

8090 - Can't seem to find them in stock at a decent price anywhere

One90 - Not convinced the price is worth it

G35- Never skated in one, not sure if its the right skate for me

Kor - Lots of hype, not a lot of field testing with it

RBK 8K - Not a ot of reviews of this, so I am not sure of

CCM Vector 10.0 - I used to use the 1152s and liked them

Synergy 1200/1500 - Easton may finally make a decent skate.

I have read quite a few of the reviews, but most people look at it from a forward perspective, while I am looking for something with the stiffness and protection. Cost will eventually play into this, but I am hoping to pick up a pair for around $200, as I tend to spend another $100 on putting custom runners on it (I prefer 306's)

I've had KORs since December playing a couple times a week, sometimes more, and they're still stiff as hell and show only cosmetic wear (even that's minor) and I've had no problems with them or complaints about them. I'm 6'2" 210lbs, but I do play forward. I have, however; taken a few hard shots off the skates and only received a bruise from one of the shots and missed no games due to that - in other skates I think the shot that bruised my foot may have done much worse. I usually wear E or EE in most brands and the KORs expanded just find to my foot. I'd recommend the KORs, but then again I haven't used the other skates (well I've used Vector Pros which are similar to the 10s...I like the KORs better, but then again I had the wrong size Vector Pros)

it depends the kor shift 2's are lower cut skate do you like lower cut? because that seems like one of the few differences in between the two skates

Given the various options that I presented earlier, I can snag a pair of 8Ks for between 250->300. Assuming it fits, am I better off with that or going for a different skate?

well i would just go with what you think feels better there is no specific skate for a d-man i would just have a good protecting skate so when you block a shot it doesnt hurt like a b#*@#

For the KORs, is it worth waiting for the Shift2s?

I think the shift 2 is going to be too stiff for most people. I had to leave the top eyelet unlaced on my shift 1s and I'm not a small guy. I actually used to intentionally reach out with my foot to block shots with my Kors, the protection is excellent.

I love my synergy 1500's, very stiff and really responsive. They are also really comfortable. They will last you. PLus when you get a shot off the skate, you dont feel it at all

I think one90s are worth the money my son loves them.

He loves how light they are and they are very stiff and its like having a concrete wall around your feet, very well protected

The One90s are stiff as all hell, but I find that I feel it every time a puck even grazes my boot, much more so than my old Grafs. Even fairly weak shots have hurt like crazy in my One90s. I have wondered whether this is a logical consequence of the zero-negative space concept.

Another vote for Kor. I've had the Shift 1's for about 9 months and I love them. Chadd is right about the protection too. It's top notch.

As others have said, the skates are stiff as rocks, but still very comfortable due to the thermoform process.

Great skates, but I don't think you'll get them for $200.

I'll also back the CCM 652 Tacks. I also play D, have taken plenty of pucks off the skates and these bad boys are still kicking. But yeah, replace the crap holders that are stock on them.

Also, what is "Kor"? Not familiar with the brand and Google produces nothing. You MSHers and your lingo!...
