Stupid hollow question

Recommended Posts

I purchased a pair of prostock skates and I simply love the sharpening on them...I feel the ice more or something...cant really explain it...anyway the question is they came sharpened from the senators is there a way to tell the hollow that they where sharpened too? They are Mcgrattans so he is a big guy as am I.....All I ever used was 1/2" before so this feels new and I swear my skating and game is improving ...I want to get my skates sharpened but dont want to f around with switching hollows until I find this one again.

Does it feel like you have more bite or less bite of the ice?

If you have more bite, it's a deeper hollow (less numerical size than 1/2", i.e. 3/8)

If you have less bite, it's a shallower hollow (higher numerical size, i.e. 9/16 or 5/8)

My suspicion would be a shallower hollow, as bigger guys don't need as much bite since our weight alone will give us more grip than smaller guys. I'm about 260 lbs. and skate on a 9/16. when I switched from 1/2" I immediately felt a difference in speed, but it took me about 1/2 hour on the ice to get used to having less grip. Still, the 9/16 gives more than enough.

It could also be the profile that mcgratton uses that you're digging. If this is the case, changing a hollow won't affect the profile.

If he skates on them a while thus dulling them, would it be difficult to measure the hollow?

Yes, if the edges are real worn down you can't get a good measurement.

Sniper, based on what you say, it's probably deeper than the 1/2 you are using if they fell grippier, so why not have your sharpener do say 7/16 and see if that feels the same. If that's not enough, then go to 3/8.

even attempt to have them measured and try a 1/16th deeper than what was measured. At least the measurement of what is on them even with the wear will give you a good starting point to determine the hollow that was on the skates.

It might even have something to do with the profile as well.

Maybe you can email/write to the Ottawa organization and ask them.

Actually I thought they where less grippy so I would need a lesser hollow right but how much?

shallower hollow = higher number.

for example:

5/8 is shallower than 3/8

Since it was less grippy, you want shallower. I'd say try it in 1/16 increments. from 1/2", the next step would be 9/16ths, and then 5/8ths. It seems like a small change, but it can make a big difference.
