When Sather got here, things were a mess and Sather had not had the best rep during the past decade either. And he underachieved big time his first few seasons here as GM.

Before he even finished his first season with the Rangers Theo. The moment he was with NYR the parade route was being planned. The "Best GM" who was working miracles with no money now had an unlimited budget. It took him a year or two to prove he wasn't. People loved what he was doing in Edmonton building his exciting teams with no money and still unloading players at the deadline. Maybe it was just the Canadian networks, but they loved the Oilers and loved the job Sather did.

I just checked Oilers stats from 90s. Sather must have been the Wizard of Oz because he fooled everybody. From 90-91 season to 99-00 season, the Oilers had a winning record only twice! They made the playoffs 6 out of the 10 years even with the losing records. Two 3rd round exits in 90-91 and 91-92, two round 2 exits in 96-97 and 97-98 and 2 round 1 exits in 98-99 and 99-00. Talk about smoke and mirrors!!

Your damn right it was smoke and mirrors. His budget was a huge excuse. If they didn't make it, they were the poor Oilers. If the did, they were the incredible oilers.

They will consider just about anything at this point. I would expect them to explore the trade market and see what defensemen are available.
