Under Armour

Recommended Posts

For some reason synthetic materials have always absorbed oders. Poly and cotton-poly blend t-shirts are the same way. Play hard, sweat and wash. If you don't like the smell, buy all-cotton. No one in the locker room will care if your under armor smells.

Thanks, Jason. I took a quick peek at their website yesterday. Still trying to justify the cost of the stuff though since I never have the "stink" issue as I let my stuff hang dry after a game and then wash it every game on the "sanitize" setting on my washer along with the rest of my non-protective gear. I usually use straight lysol or the Febreeze antibacterial or the SprayFresh OT Odor Eliminator on my protective stuff.

Regs,

Jeff

There is a premium price associated with it but, technically -- and I mean that in the "technical" use of the word... ;) -- it is the most advanced under garment on the market that I'm aware of.

I'm one of the most skeptical people you're ever going to find and the puckskin stuff actually works. I played a game in the Hershey AHL rink, really warm rink, then left my stuff in my bag all night and all day the next day until my league game. I pulled out the puckskin shirt and, no odor. I threw it in the bag again after that game and 2 days later I used it to ref a game and still, no odor.

Hockey Giant has Nike Dri-fit Pro-vent compression shirts on sale. $7.99 for short sleeve, 9.99 for the long sleeve with the rubberized pads on the elbows and forearms. Not as good as puck skin sounds, but can't beat the price.

Thanks for the endoresement, Chadd. Looks like this may be a more worthwhile purchase than I initially thought once I get some more disposable income. Thanks, buddy.

So this may be a really dumb question, but hey... I'm dumb so I may as well ask it. :)

If you do wear something like the long pants version of the pucksin stuff, what do you do for a jock? Do you just wear your normal hockey jock over top of it? Or do you wear an old-school jock underneath? What about underwear? Yes? No? I guess my best guess is wear the puckskin with or without underwear, then slip your hockey jock over top of that. Thoughts?

Thanks,

Jeff

I only wear the pants when I ref because of the issues you mention. I wish they would put a pouch and velcro on the pants. I use the shirt for everything.

Ahh, ok. So, for those that have worn or wear this stuff during gametime... what the heck do you do?

Maybe it's time for a little email to the puckskin guys about the pouch and velcro? I'll write them a little later tonight.

Thanks,

Jeff

I've mentioned it to them. Based on the response, I don't think the all-in-one jock/velcro is as popular in Vancouver. Consequently, they say you'd put your cup and garter over the pants.

However, in the US, I'd estimate that less than 20% of the players are still using garters. The question is would adding the jock/velcro increase sales, or would it be better to educate the players to just put the hockey jock over the pants? I'd lean toward altering the design, since that seems to be what the market wants.

In my area it's well under 20%, probably in the single digits for garter use. It's a hard sell to get someone to pay for the pants, then pay again for their compression jock and velcro.

I'd say it's closer to like maybe 2 guys out of the 60 or so in our league that use garters. Both are in their mid 50's in age and grew up using them. The rest of us are pretty much the velcro jock dudes. I was considering trying a pair of those SockJawz just because I have a couple pair of socks that are short and tend to break loose of the velcro after one period of skating and it pisses me off. That's why I'm much happier with the CCM brand of socks... they tend to be longer and wear much better than the AK or SP that I have.

Anyway, if it's not worth contacting the puckskin goobers, I guess I'll hold off. The thing is, it's already friggin hot out there on the ice as it is... so wearing yet another layer under my jock is just going to make it hotter, no matter WHAT they advertise as far as wicking goes. At least that's been my experience with the Dri-Fit and UA stuff vs. no base layer at all.

Thanks,

Jeff

What? Everyone doesn't have the Itech or Shock Doctor style jock? Oy, I can't imagine not having one of those...

Man, I had to lose that ShockDoctor jock. Tried it for two practices and couldn't get used to it. Darn thing just never felt like it was cupping the boys... just felt like it was sitting on top of them, ready to squish them like grapes at the first impact. I'll stick with my WSI stuff for now, jock-wise.

Later,

Jeff

Screw it... I emailed Greg in product development about adding the jock pocket and velcro anyway. The minute he adds that, I add a pair of the long pants to my ensemble. As I said to nearly everyone in my league... "I suck.. but at least I look good!" :)

Later,

Jeff

Everyone hated the Itech ones that we had. The WSI seems to sell best around here.

I never had a problem with the length of SP socks, how tall are you? The wear has been pretty good with them as well. I do find when the velcro starts to get old I have to wrap one layer of tape over the sock/velcro to make sure it stays in place.

See, that's just the weird part. I'm 6'3", but most of my height is in my torso, not my legs. That's why I thought it was weird that I had an issue with SP ones. Granted, the AK ones are a BILLION time worse. The SP aren't as bad... I just seem to prefer the CCM. The Nike ones I had sent from the Ohio State pro shop to match my OSU jersey are really nice too. Too bad I can't find anyone who sells the Nike socks online.

Thanks,

Jeff

While surfing across Sports Authority's site I came across this product:

http://www.sportsauthority.com/product/ind...rentPage=family

It's a detergent that's supposed to restore the moisture the moisture-wicking properties of clothing. Not sure if anyone's tried it or heard anything. It could be a good thing but if it's all BS, then $19.99 is pretty expensive for BS.

I wash cold. Then pull it out, hand squeegy it and hang it up to dry.

No weird smells and no damage.
