There's something more the JJ situation because the return they got was absoloutely terrible. It's either among the worst trades in history, Or Johnson was doing something behind the scenes that made his value drop like a stone.

Is he signed for a rookie contract? I thought he only had 2 years before he went back into the draft?

Not signed, and its rumored he has said he WILL play 4 years of college hockey. Effectively making him worthless because he will have to be re-drafted if he doesnt sign. That might be the reason his value was worthless.

I'd be really surprised to see him re-enter the draft. Lombardi will get it done.

I was being sarcastic. I figured after 5000 posts, someone might have figured that out.

I know...I was just clarifying the situation for everyone else. :)

Signing ruins his eligibility, correct? If so, there won't be a huge window for him to sign.

Yeah....but he could sign after Michigan's season ends and get into the last few games of the seasons with the Kings. I'm not sure when the window closes and he has to declare himself again for school.

Carolina tried to sign him at the end of their season last year.

Chadd - What do you mean by declare? Like Carolina drafted him against his will?

If I remember correctly all Canadians are draft eligible when they are 18, you're essentially "in" the draft no matter what. If you are drafted and unsigned you go back into the draft in a couple years. If you aren't drafted you are UFA at the end of juniors. I am not entirely sure what the rule is for Americans but I believe it is similar.

For the NHL or NBA, players have to declare that they want to opt in to the draft. I remember a story last year (?) that a student declared for the draft despite not being an athlete just to mock the system.

Eazy that was the big problem between JJ and Carolina. He told them from day 1 that he wasnt going to sign for a minimum of 2 years. That he wanted to play 2 yrs of college and then make his decision. They tried to sign him 3 times in one year. Personally I think that soured JJ on Carolina and theres a good chance he told them to pound sand and he wasnt going to sign with them and go back into the draft. Thats why the return they got wasnt as great as some would have thought. Wouldnt suprise me to see him signed after this college season depending on how Michigan does. Especially considering his fave player is Rob Blake.

I thought you had to pay to enter the draft. That was my understanding of it. It's 2 seasons before you re-enter I believe. Jarett Stoll did it, so maybe check his?
