Going back and forth from ice to roller

Recommended Posts

My question is for those of you who play both ice and roller on a regular basis. I have been playing roller for years and finally started playing ice. My problem is when playing roller hockey sometimes I feel like my skates are glued to the floor or I am stuck in mud for the first few minutes when the last time I played hockey before that was ice hockey. Can any guys help me on what I can due to stop this from occurring when I play roller for the first few minutes?

Just adjust yourself mentally for it. Know that skating roller and ice is different and be ready. It takes me a couple mins but I'm good before we actually start to play.

After being on ice I will eat it on inline a few times during warmup also. That's why I skate hard during warm up, implementing stops both ways, w/ a lot of forwards and backwards crossovers.

The heavyness I believe is from not only the heavier skate but the type of stride you use. After playing ice a lot more, my stride adjusted in both to be very similar and I no longer feel like I'm in mud. Also I use a short quicker stride on take off in roller more than I used to, to compensate. ;)

I still wipe it on roller cutting hard w/ both feet together like I can in ice, but not too much. Over all, I truly believe that my ice time and inline time now complement each other. I used to heavily prefer inline, but now enjoy both equally (or close anyways). :P

FYI I was forced into Ice as inline time was becomeing unavailable. Either ice, or only 1 skate per week :o ...

I agree with hockeydoc that as you play both over a longer period of time, it will become much easier to transition. I found that ice improved my overall game immensely, especially when it came to anticipation and reading plays, since everything happens more quickly on ice.

I have trouble if I play a lot of one without the other...but otherwise...not much trouble..

a couple things that I do now to help offset the current 2 ice games on Sun and then a roller game on Mon

stickhandle..I make sure I handle the roller puck before we hit the floor for warmups..nothing fancy just 25 back and forth in front..on the side and behind..

skating.. after a couple easy laps I do some figure 8's..get used to the turning/cutting/accelerating (or lack thereof on the floor...and just work on trying to get my feet to turn over..that's the biggest issue I have on roller is that my leg turnover is slow compared to ice (and well no hands)

For some reason, there is no transition for me. It feels pretty natural for me to go from ice to roller and back again; but I don't play roller competitively, I just fool around in my street and stuff like that. Well, I play with a ball too so I can't comment on the differences with roller/ice pucks.

Once I tried to do a hockey stop on pavement. The end result wasn't pretty at all...

It is the HOCKEY STOPS, and transitions that are the major issues IMO going from roller to ice.

Not doing hockey stops on pavement negates the whole issue...
