Torching the butt-end of your stick

During the Predators-Flyers game tonight between periods they showed #25 (Smithson?) Heavily torching the butt-end of his stick about 3 inches away from the very end. I don't mean warming up, or burning excess tape off, I mean he was practically burning a hole through the stick. Anyone have any idea what the reason would be?

there was tape on it? I've seen a few of the guys heat up the top of the shaft like that to insert an end plug but not torch the tape.

He ripped the tape off and then began torching, but left some tape at the very top.

I posted this moments after seeing it on TV, so I can't see how it was discussed before.

My friends and I decided he wanted to put some sort of bend in the butt end, like a make-shift Oggie.

I ment a sperarate incident and TBLfan is the guy with the avatar from it, although it's the lower blade he's torching and not the handle.
