Best Skilled fighter?

Recommended Posts

I am just wondering since the NHL is slowly removing designated fighters out of the game...who do you think is a player, past or present, who can contribute on a NHL team and still drop them?

Jarome Iginla

Rick Tocchet

Zdeno Chara

Wendall Clark

...?

If you mean the most skilled player (who will also fight)...I'd say Iginla

If you mean the fighter with the most skill...I dunno...got think about it more.

Leo Boivin, hands down... but only the really old guys will remember him. How about Gordie Howe? He was probably the best. Cam Neely (Ponty...?) should be on the list, as should Shanahan in his prime.

As for guys that were primarily fighters... Probert, he'd be my first choice.

Just to clairify...a player who can fight but can play a regular shift...

Chris Neil for example started as a fighter but changed his game so that he can now play a regular shift...Ian Lapierre also is a player who sticks up for his teammates but isn't a benchwarmer...

Al Secord. Granted, he wouldn't have scored 50 goals if he wasn't on a line with Savard and Larmer, but in his prime he was a great mix of scoring and toughness.

Exactley, alot of skilled players can handle themselves in the NHL these days but also alot of "Fighters" can handle themselves in the offensive/defensive aspect of the game aswell because they have to.

as of now from what I've seen of him (not very much) I'd say Laraque...

Did you see the video on TSN...Laraque and Raitis Ivanans (LA)... before a face off...

Laroque goes..."Wanna square off"

Raitis: "Okay..."

Laroque: "Alright...good luck then..."

Puck drops...gloves drop...fight!

Pretty funny.

for the moment i don't know, but i'm sure that Johnny Oduya (Devils)will grow in to a defensive giant in a few years.. And this guy can fight too.. He's allmost as good fighting as his older brother (Fredrik Oduya), but a much better hockey player.

Chadds gonna agree with me on this one- Probert.

29g 33a 398PIM in one season followed by 8g 13a 51PIM in 16 playoff games. It's never going to happen again.

Probert probably put up the best numbers...the guy was also the best fighter in NHL history...in his prime...So the argument for "who was the best skilled fighter" cant really be made against him in the fighting department...because he was clear cut the best.

But if your talking like, top notch players, i think wendal clark, howe, shanahan, lindros and tochet deserve to be mentioned.

Iginlia, isnt a very good fighter...he is willing, but he isnt gonna fair to well against the heavyweights...the above guys were heavyweights, and every bit as good a player at the same time, some were better.

The true power foward tough guy dies out when shanahan leaves the game...while he isnt dropping the gloves anymore, he is pretty much the last guy who was tough enough to fight the top fighters in the league and score more goals than anyone.

Makes me laugh when people call joe thornton a power foward...clearly the definition of power foward changed and someone forgot to tell me.
