Need Help With My Skates* Mods Go Ahead And Lock :)

Recommended Posts

When I bought my Pure Fly's my toes & forefoot area were very tight and uncomfortable. I started lacing my skates at the second set of eyelets up from the toebox which let that area expand a little wider to relieve the pressure. In other words, leave the first row of eyelets open and start lacing at the second row. I also shaved the 'ears' off of the edges of the toebox inside the skate because they were grinding on the sides of my pinky toes.

Now that I've skated a lot of the stiffness out of them they fit like a glove and I'm lacing them all the way down.

I am also having major problems with the One90s. I've had them for about 5 months now. When I first got them, they felt ok but definitely does not feel super comfortable for a skate with that kind of pricetag. It didn't fit like a glove and although my feet is snug, I didn't feel that 'negative space' feature. Also my skating felt wierd and it was a little off. Hard to explain it but I just didn't feel right in those skates. It seems like the more I skated in them, the more uncomfortable they felt. Some days they feel OK and some days my feet will hurt. The other problem I have is my skating. I've added heel lifts and that helped a little bit. I've been experimenting with different hollows to try to fix the problem. I've gone from 1/2" to 3/8" and it feels the same to me. I don't feel the edge and my skates will slip when I accelerate too fast and I can stop easily even with the deeper hollow.

JR, of course its the skate's fault. C'mon, these guys spent lots of money. The more I read, the more I can't believe mine fit!

I swear, this thread...

Is it the skate's fault if they don't fit your type of foot?

When I bought my last pair of skates I tried on every make to see which one felt better on my foot and finally settled on Graf 705s like your old skates. I have tried the Easton 1300 and the One90 and found them too stiff... for me.

Beaver5, sounds like panic is setting in. From the footbeds you describe, I think the right skate is just too small. Even when I bought my Grafs for $400 dollars I felt it was a lot of money, but the fit was worth every penny. Maybe moving from the comfort of Grafs is an adjustment for you. I hope they can help you out..., but why didn't you get another pair of 705s or G5s?

No it's not the skate's fault. It's my mom's fault... for giving me these feet :D

LMAO Nah, it is your DAD's fault... if he had stronger genes you would have been given HIS feet.

went back in today and the right foot had been on the stretcher all night.

popped it on and its barely any bigger at all. at the most id say 1/3 of a size. its still very crampe. the salesman wasnt in today so i have to wait until tomorrow to talk to him. probably just going to order 11's in and be done with it.

Yea, I found out years ago that bauer does not really fit my foot, at least not as well as CCM...speaking of which, does anyone know how the fit of vectors compares to tacks?

Vectors are a narrower fitting skate.

how can you skate one the skates multiple times, get them cut up and everything, get them stretched, and then just return them and get your full money back?

Thats just one of the benefits of buying from your LHS.

No, it isn't.

Trust me, I'm going through this right now with a customer. The idiot just did not want to put the work into the skate and wants the next size, so now I am stuck with a pair of used skates. I had to pull some strings to get this done, but this is not a common practice. Always an excuse...

IMO, once the customer agrees that the skates are what they want, and that they fit them, they own them. No returns. As much as we can size them, fit them and ask them how they feel, all we have to go on is how they say they like the fit. If we slide on the slippery slope of letting customers skate on them and return them at whim, then skate prices are going to rise big time. The customer has the final say before they hand over the cash. We just can't take back used skates, they are virtually worthless once skated on.

It would be stupid for a shop to accept skates that have been used...I could see maybe letting the customer take a few laps around the rink, but if there are any signs of wear, they can't be sold as new.

I highly doubt that the original poster has a real option of returning the skates. Sounds like a bit of a shady salesman to me. Even though they don't fit well, he will "make them work", and claims they will readily accept them back if they don't. What do you think he will say if you go in and say you've had it and want a different pair? Sounds fishy. Maybe they really will take them back though, and are standup guys...I just think that it should be clear to the customer what the store's policy is. And they certainly don't need to accept a used skate as a return.

one of the first pairs of RBK skates I bought were a little too big after breaking them in. I was encouraged by a store employee to bring them back, because "the store offered 30 day return policy, and they were still on 90 day warranty" - so I figured they'd send them back to CCM as 'defective' and so on, and so forth.

I got into my new size, and a week later- my old RBK's were on the floor, priced 30% off. The store took them back, and pretty much took a hit on them I'm assuming. I felt terrible, so I purchased them again, as a gift to my fiancee's little nephew (he isn't little at all. haha)

from my experiences in retail, this is basically "shrink", and stores lose money from it... I don't see how they take these back.

Basically what we want to avoid is the abuse, the person who wants to try out 6 or 10 models. If you had a return policy, there would be no risk to the customer and they would abuse it big time. As for the orig poster, if he was told by the store that they'd take them back, then nothing wrong with that.

that is exactly what I see at my local shop. It's a bigger chain-store in New England.. but being a regular customer- I've seen it so many times in passing. Customer wants Vapor XXX's, insists on XXX's.... buys XXX's without taking the time, and advise from a store rep.... returns XXX's because "they hurt my feet" (?!?) gets into something else.... lather, rinse, repeat.

I commend you shop workers. Just based on some of the situations I hear in the store whilst shopping.

Only one thing I can think of. I wonder what the return to mfgr rate is for said store - "broken" eyelets and such.

My store actually has a return policy. Based on the fact that we still own two Play It Again franchises, we have a bit more leeway and we can assess the value and give back store credit towards another skate.

what ended up happening with your one90's? did you get them in size 7EE or did you go rbk?

I ended up sticking with my RBK 8K's... When I take a break from playing around Christmas/New Years, I'm gonna have some work done on them, thanks to JR...

I lost my job the day after I got my deposit back from the shop... so I have a little coin to meddle with.

Mods you can go ahead and lock this topic.

This is one of the biggest hockey stores in alberta, quite possibly western canada. Im sure they have some ability to return products based on usage a few times.

i have to agree with the problems with the one90 so far. i purchased mine about a month and a half ago and it took me about 3 weeks to break them in well, which is not the problem as i expected that when i purchased such stiff skates. however, last week, the tendon guard snapped during a game...i dont know how it happened, but i went to hang my skates up and it was just cracked across the top of the back of the boot, hanging on only by the leather (or whatever that material actually is) that covers the tendon guard. needless to say im sorta up shits creek because now that this boot is broken i should really return it, but if i return it, its gonna take another 3 weeks to somewhat break in another pair of one90s. i have to say that if i do return the skates as i should, it is unlikely that i will get 90s again, just because the performance improvement (if there is one) is not worth the hassle of these skates for me. i will be looking at the 9k (possibly in a c width) as well as the synergy 1500, but edging toward the 9k on the fact that my brother had nothing but problems with the screws in the holder system on his synergys coming out during games and the blades breaking constantly. basically, 90s perform very well and i did like them, but i dont think they hold up nearly as well as they should given their price tag.

Sounds like skates are not "what they used to be". I am having trouble deciding on what I want to buy... old vapor 10s would be nice.
