Shorter guys....

Recommended Posts

I have a bit of an issue. I'm around 5'6 and have an issue with sticks and flex. It seems that many of the stick are around 60" which is a couple inches to tall for me and by the time I take an 85 flex stick and shave 2 inches off of it I'm somewhere around 105 flex which is just way to stiff. On the other the Intermediate 56" sticks are to short and to soft. I tryed one for giggles and it broke on the first shot .

Now when I was in my Local LHS they had a RBK 7K Shaft in a Mid Flex and it appeared a couple inches short then the stiff flex. Same with the Vector 10.0 which didn't suprise me because they are both the same company.

So I guess my question is has anyone used these shafts and if so whats your opinion or if you have any other suggestions that would be great.

Two inches off of an 85 flex stick will not make it a 105 flex - not even close. If it is too stiff, however, and you still want a senior stick, look for a TPS in a Whip flex. I have no experience with the RBK or Vector.

Really nothing you can do except adapt. Just shoot a lot and become proficient in that area. I find flex means less if you have good shooting techniques. I actually like stiffer shafts over the flexier ones now.

I am around 5' 6" myself and gave up a long time ago worrying about flex.

My height is 5' 8" and also need to cut off a couple of inches from a new senior stick. The lie on my Easton SiCore is a 5.5. I was wondering if shorter guys should get a lie of 5 or 6 or keep the 5.5?

Come to think of it I think the height wasn't a big issue, but it was way to soft and broke literally on the first couple shots if it wasn't the first shot.

I had used an intermediate synergy in bantams that broke and was told by Easton that was I putting to much stress on the 75's and they wouldn't warranty it. So I switched to a Senior stick when I started playing High School Hockey and used a 85 Flex Synergy that I had cut and got hurt shortly after. I started playing again (junior in college) and still have that same synergy. I shoot ok with it but it just feels a tad bit too stiff. Which is why I'm trying to hunt down something just a little bit softer.

The synergy I have now is an Iginla pattern it's a 5.5 lie and it appears that the heel is wearing down more then the rest of the blade. I'm guessing I need a lie a little bit lower? Good thing you mentioned that because that was the other question I had

Bauer does make the 77 flex in full senior length and dimensions (sadly, RBK/CCM's mid sticks are smaller than the sr sticks). The vapor v2 77 is as long as the 87 or 102. If you cut two inches off that, you're getting close to the 85. It will definitely be stiffer than the 67/70 flex ints.

im 5'6 and bought the vapor 77 flex but was told it only came in intermediate. i still cut some of of the intermediate sticks. I never had a problem with flex. back in the day i dont even remember thinking about flex. My aluminums were like steal beams. It didnt hinder me at all.

My XXX lite is a 77 Senior. Also, two inches does not equal a 20 pt increase in flex. I cut 2.5 inches off my 85 SLs and they've all been noodles. Maybe try a TPS whip?

My height is 5' 8"

My original OPS is:

Easton SiCore, Flex 85, Lie 5.5 with Iginla curve (no grip).

I cut 3 inches off the end and feels very stiff to me.

Today I purchased a new stick:

Vapor XXX Lite, Flex 87, Lie 5 with PM9 St. Louis curve (with grip).

My plan is to cut 2 inches off the end seeing the lie is different.

My plan is to monitor the tape wear on the bottom of the stick and adjust the stick length accordingly.

Please let me know how much stiffer each inch removed from stick will add.

I'm agree with the second post's recommendation to try the TPS whip. I'm a hair taller than you and use it without a but end and honestly I love that stick. It's all PP in the end but give it a shot (no pun intended) I think you might like it.

Check out the NBH catalog, then search for "Find your flex". There will be a table giving the effective flexes after cutting 2", 4" and 6" off sticks in various flexes.

The irony is that the shorter players who - all things being equal - likely could benefit from a little more flex, end up with just the opposite because they have to cut their sticks/shafts so much. The problem gets even worse if they like to play with a relatively short stick to boot.

I'm also 5'6" and the shaft diameter and flex of the CCM vector 8.0/10.0 senior regular flex (40KP) sticks are perfect. I usually cut off 4.5"

I totally agree w/ the TPS whip suggestion. I use intermediates for inline but was breaking them easily on ice, so I got a senior TPS whip cut it way down and it was still a bit flexy, but it lasted over 2 years on ice. I've never gotten that kind of wear out of anything else, even for inline.

This is exactly what I've run into. I've picked up a 77 Flex XXX Lite and I am going to pick up a TPS Whip once I figure out which one I want.

Thanks for all the help!!
