Shaving a stick handle

Recommended Posts

Just curious as to how this is done. Also, peeps who do it...why?

I've never done it myself, although back in my woody days I'd pick up some sticks that had it done by the factory and I never really noticed a huge diff in performance.

i start with a boxcutter with a fresh blade, nipping at the corners, cutting them down the length of the buttend. then I sand it all smooth and round by hand. I take my time with it; it's a labor of love, as is any work I do to my sticks.

Only done it a few times, I actually don't like butt ends in my composites, but I've recently gone to a longer stick and my shafts were all too short. I did it because i like the rounded feel of it, seems easier to pull moves with a rounded butt.

I use a rasp similar to this, you can get one at any hardware store. Shaving the handle allows you to tape a better grip.

Spanks for the input. I guess there's no way to shave a composite handle, eh?

It would break, the shaftwall is only a couple mm thick. Most people cut down the composite stick/shaft and add a shaved wood plug.

No, but that's why Joe C invented the Oggie Grip, since he used to shave his wooden sticks when he grew up. He wanted the same thing for a composite stick, which required creating a composite extension that fits most hands better.

The accidental byproduct was the Oggie Grip also enhances the flex of the stick to be less than the original, but that wasn't the intention when he created the Oggie.

Ok. We don’t recommend you try this at home but, we’ve done this in response to many players including some pros that say they like to hold their hand halfway off the stick.

We've modified our Ergo Grip and show some pics below. Check this out.

Pic 1. Shave and round off the top side and bottom side of the grip on a belt sander.

Pic 2. Shows the completed shaved end of the grip before application of cohesive tape. Don’t be afraid to take the rubber off when sanding. (It looks like total crap huh?)

Pic 3. Comparison between stock Oggie (pink) and shaved Oggie (black) designed to hold your hand off the end.

While a composite butt end is very thin ... I was able to round the corners by using a grinder that my dad had. You had to be careful to not apply too much pressure to break through but it worked.

Something just looks wrong about that pic, Joe.

JR. I think it's just the pink tape job that's making it look a little sexual...

I'll use a different color next time. :D

I can make shadows like that on the wall too.

Speaking of the wall, I talked to Jason today and he mentioned all the cut sticks I have on the wall.

Let's see how good you guys are.

First one to guess all the cut stick manufacturer's make and model gets a free Oggie. :D
